We are just at the start of the 2025 Major League Baseball (MLB) season where the majority of the teams have only completed three or four games. Comparatively, it wouldn’t make much sense to expect major shifts from the initial Power Rankings posted after the MLB’s initial week. As such, we still see the Braves and Red Sox keeping their commendable rankings while the Cardinals and Marlins are striving to escape the lower third of the list. We look forward to an exciting week of baseball action ahead.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are undefeated in this early season, maintaining their top spot from last week. Star player Mookie Betts, despite dealing with an undisclosed illness that led to significant weight loss, showed signs of recovery over the weekend with an impressive two-homer game that sealed a win over the Tigers.
In the second position, we have the Philadelphia Phillies, having risen from their previous third spot. Jesús Luzardo turned heads during his Phillies’ debut against the Nationals, racking up 11 strikeouts. After being restrained to a mere 12 starts last year due to injury, Luzardo demonstrated his stellar potential similar to his pre-2024 form, suggesting a stronger Philly rotation this season.
Atlanta Braves slipped one position from last week to the current third spot after a rough start. The Braves, having only managed a team average of .148, are yet to get their game on, falling to the Padres in their season-opening.
The Boston Red Sox, despite a bleak start, maintain their fourth position from the previous week. Rafael Devers experienced a forgettable series against the Rangers with an 0-for-12 record and 11 strikeouts following a shoulder injury, raising concerns regarding his transition to the Designated Hitter spot.
Sitting fifth are the Arizona Diamondbacks, up from sixth place last week. Eugenio Suárez exhibited an impressive recovery from a mid-season slump last year, hitting a commendable 28 home runs across the last 77 games, which includes four homers at the dawn of the 2025 season.
The New York Yankees rose to the sixth position from last week’s seventh, visually demonstrating their power play through a stunning hitting performance against the Brewers. With their new bats, the Yankees tied an MLB record, producing 15 home runs in the first three games. The question remains whether the impressive performance was a result of the Yankee’s hitting or the Brewer’s compromised pitching squad.
Conversely, the New York Mets dropped two positions to the seventh spot on the list. Despite a spectacular homer from Juan Soto, the Mets’ offense mostly stuttered in their series with the Astros. However, their pitching staff was on point, conceding just six runs over three games.
The Texas Rangers defended their eighth position from last week. Jacob deGrom exhibited a promising performance in their win against the Red Sox on Sunday, completing five scoreless innings with six strikeouts and 16 swinging strikes out of his 73 total pitches.
In the ninth position, we have the Houston Astros, representing consistency from the previous week. The combined efforts of Framber Valdez, Hunter Brown, and Spencer Arrighetti delivered a stingy performance, surrendering just four runs (three earned) in their three-game series against the Mets.
Rounding out the top ten are the Baltimore Orioles, maintaining their ranking from last week although facing injury challenges. Despite expecting the return of Gunnar Henderson from the injured list, they suffered a significant blow after losing Colton Cowser due to a fractured left thumb, causing an anticipated absence of approximately six weeks.
Sitting at eleventh place, the San Diego Padres stepped up from their twelfth rank last week. The Padres witnessed Nick Pivetta dominating against the Braves, leading them to a record 4-0, the second in franchise history after 1984. During that iconic season, the Padres won the NL pennant but eventually lost the World Series to the Tigers.
In twelfth position, we have the Seattle Mariners, climbing one step from the previous week. Despite concerns lingering over their offensive capabilities, Julio Rodríguez’s substantial go-ahead two-run home run on Sunday lends a glimpse of optimism.
