Kamala Harris: Replacing Biden, or Merely Keeping His Seat Warm?

Mounting evidence reveals a whirlwind change in the forthcoming presidential election. With the unexpected farewell of President Joe Biden from the race, Vice President Kamala Harris has seized the opportunity to restructure the Democratic campaign, all while Republicans are gearing up their offense. A word of caution though: it’s still early for a victory dance on the Democrats’ side.

‘Look at those numbers!’ That might be the sound echoing from Harris’ campaign office. They’ve managed to rally more than 170,000 new volunteers and amass a staggering $200 million since Biden’s departure. Following up with a successful fundraiser in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, she raked in an extra $1.4 million, surpassing their initial goal by $1 million.

Harris, it seems, is attempting to mend the strained relations with the Democratic base that Biden had been struggling with – particularly winning over people of color and young voters. She insists there’s no room for complacency, rallying the youth vote at the ‘Voters of Tomorrow’ summit in Atlanta, Georgia. But whether her efforts will find resonance within this crucial demographic is yet to be seen.

There’s a glimmer of hope for Harris in the form of poll results. An Emerson College/The Hill poll suggests she’s eating into the Republican lead in certain swing states, despite former President Trump’s slight lead. However, the wisdom of this Democrat strategy will only be proved when the ballots are counted.

‘Democrat recovery after the June 27 debate is nothing but a myth!’ Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling makes this bold claim. Surely, the Democrats’ focus on young voters is certainly showing signs of dividends, with Harris reportedly gaining ground against Trump in multiple key states. But does this echo the wider sentiment of the nation?

A new Fox News poll places Harris neck and neck with Trump in significant swing states Pennsylvania and Michigan. meanwhile, Trump holds a slight edge in Wisconsin. But honestly, any victory headlines for Harris here are still premature.

Academic Peter Loge from George Washington University’s School of Media and Public Affairs predicts that Harris can put states previously won by Biden back in play. Well, that would have been a great accomplishment… for Biden, not Harris.

Meanwhile, in his unshakable style, Trump has maintained a busy campaign schedule. He spoke at a Bitcoin conference in Nashville, Tennessee the other day, followed by a massive rally in St. Cloud, Minnesota. As always, he proves to be unafraid of criticizing his opponents, with Harris being no exception to his verbal jabs.

In sharp contrast to Harris, Trump has seized the opportunity to take a slap at the Democrats’ record on immigration and inflation. In a brilliant rallying cry in Minnesota, he continued to remind his supporters about Harris’ ‘border czar’ label, indicating that under her watch, there was a substantial influx of migrants across the border.

Ad wars have intensified on television and radio, where, as per Associated Press, the Trump campaign has managed to outspend Harris’ team by a staggering 25-to-1. Now that’s a ratio the Democrats can only dream of!

In her initial campaign ad, Harris took a rather predictable approach. She painted herself as the guardian of freedom, from safeguarding reproductive rights to ensuring safety from gun violence. But are hollow promises enough to secure a presidential seat? Only time will tell.

Harris’ campaign ad floats the idea of choosing freedom over chaos, fear, and hate. Interesting how she insinuates that what the Republicans offer is a country of chaos, fear, and hate, while the inverse seems to be painfully apparent to most of us. But then again, trying to reframe reality seems to be a popular Democratic pastime.

In a likely attempt to save face, the Democratic Party is gearing up to kickstart a virtual voting process to nominate its ticket. With the voting expected to begin as early as August 1st, it’s expected Harris will be officially declared the nominee.

With an entire campaign in her hands, Harris will choose her running mate by August 7. We can only watch with bated breath as to who will join her on what appears to be a Titanic-like journey towards the presidential election.

It’s clear that Harris is desperately trying to fill the shoes of Joe Biden. But the question remains, is she the leader that Democrats need to reclaim the White House? Some might say she’s simply a wolf in sheep’s clothing, trying to appeal to the public with grand promises that she may not fulfill.

The political landscape is certainly strained, marked by rising tensions between the two parties as election day nears. While the Democrats scramble to redefine their campaign after a major re-shuffle, Republicans stand strong. As anticipated, the coming weeks will be packed with a whirlwind of campaign promises, poll results, and of course, political drama.
