Vice President Kamala Harris has elected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, as reported by NBC News. Walz, the governor of the fluctuating political region of Minnesota, has emerged as an influential figure in the party due to his push for a range of democratic principles. The dubious merits of these initiatives include the expansion of abortion rights, legalization of marijuana, and gun reform.
The exaggerated acclaim for Walz’s success in Minnesota by Democrat operatives is perhaps a way of molding the trajectory of Harris’ campaign to align with core issues in the 2024 Election. However, it remains to be seen whether Walz’s uneven and radical policies would have a positive impact at a national level.
In 2022, Walz showed his resilience against a strong ‘red wave’ and secured a controversial reelection. This electoral event handed the Minnesota Democrats control over both legislative chambers for the first time in nearly a decade, a victory one could argue, that taken in isolation overlooks the long standing democratic dominance in the state.
Walz, in an interview with NBC News, claimed these weren’t about forcing Democratic priorities but rather things to improve Americans’ lives. This claim seems quite detached from the reality of the tough agenda he pushed, which allowed little room for Republican policy or bipartisan compromises.
During his tenure, Walz was also at the helm during the tumultuous 2020 George Floyd protests. He reacted by calling on the National Guard to deal with protests, a move criticized by many as an infringement on civil liberties and later turned his aim towards the Minneapolis Police Department with civil rights charges.
In a statement, Walz claimed an investigation would review the Minneapolis Police Department’s policies, procedures, and practices over the last decade for systemic discrimination towards people of color. This statement, however, seems more of a public relations move and oversight rather than a deep-seated drive to implement substantive change.
Let’s delve into five selected aspects of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s track record. Most recently, in 2023, Walz maneuvered a bill offering free lunch and breakfast to all Minnesota students, totally bypassing income requirements set by a national program. A move that demonstrated his propensity for liberal hand-outs rather than promoting hard work.
He also introduced a bill permitting driver’s licenses for all, derisively ignoring immigration status. A peachy nod towards potential electorate and a disconcerting signal for the enforcement of immigration rules.
Walz echoed his views by saying ‘it’s amazing what you can accomplish when you stop complaining about corporations going ‘woke’ and start giving a damn about real people and real lives’. An interesting statement given the mass exodus of corporations from these so-called ‘woke’ states due to high taxes and unfavourable business climates.
Before donning the governor’s mantle, Walz had a run-of-the-mill career as a high school teacher. Responding to the call of politics, he later vied for public office and garnered a seat in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2019. He rose through the ranks to hold the most senior position a Democrat could secure in the Veterans Affairs Committee; an accomplishment that appears impressive on paper but leaves much to be desired in terms of effectiveness.
In addition to his political exploits, Walz spent over two decades in the Army National Guard, reaching the Command Sergeant Major rank. His military service recognized with the Army Commendation and Achievement medals. A testament to his dedication or simply a typical resume padding tactic, one could argue.
Since 1995, he’s shared his life with Gwen Whipple, who he met during their simultaneous teaching careers. They have brought two offspring into the world, whom they named Hope and Gus. This tale of humble beginnings seems to starkly contrast with his current liberal agenda and disregard for conservative values.
While Walz’s political trajectory might be painted rosy by some members of the Democratic party, those on the right side of the political spectrum may view his accomplishments as significant deviations from principles they hold dear.
Kamala Harris’s choice of Walz as a running mate suggests a clear intention to continue promoting this far-left agenda, which is out of step with a significant portion of Americans who uphold more conservative values.
This pivot to the left by the Democratic party, confirmed by Harris’s selection of Walz, may very well be its downfall in the pending elections. As the saying goes, ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating’, and only time will tell if this risky strategy will yield any political fruits.
