The intense battle between the Republican stalwart, Donald Trump, and the presumptive Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris, is set to escalate this fall with a highly anticipated debate. Trump, demonstrating his typical fearlessness and strategic negotiation approach, has finally agreed to engage in a verbal duel with Harris. The debate will be aired live by ABC, clearly a testament to the magnetic charisma of Trump that guarantees high television ratings.
The political landscape was hit by a whirlwind when President Biden decided to step aside from the 2024 run, leaving the field open for Harris to step in. Quick to take advantage of the situation, Harris swiftly mobilized her campaign unit which also includes her newly chosen running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz – a move that has proven to be a tad bit hasty and desperate.
‘ABC News is delighted to host the qualifying presidential candidates’ debate to be held on the tenth of September, where both former President Trump and soon-to-be contender Harris have pledged their participation’, a statement from the network read. The debate is scheduled for September 10, which was originally the planned date for another rhetorical showdown between Trump and Biden.
The history-rich stage of the ABC debate will be jointly managed by its industry stalwarts David Muir and Linsey Davis. Both have solid experiences when it comes to moderating such high-stake political exchanges. Muir, known for his ‘World News Tonight’ anchor role, has been with ABC since 2003 and oversaw presidential primary debates in 2016 and 2020.
Linsey Davis, the face of ‘ABC News Live Prime’, has been an integral part of the network batting team since 2007. She adeptly handled the task of moderating presidential debates in 2019 and 2020, although, with the presence of a leader such as Trump, one can’t help but question the daunting task at hand.
The official rules of the debate are yet to be disclosed and will be shared closer to the debate night. Seemingly, keeping the audience in suspense is another card played by the Democrats with the hopes of improving their appeal. The Democratic National Convention (DNC) is just a week away.
The Democratic congregation is marked to commence from August 19th to the 22nd. Democratic representatives from all corners of the nation will unite, seemingly in an attempt to salvage what remains of their fractured party image. They’re expected to discuss their desperate hopes and plans for the future in the event of a somehow successful Harris presidential bid.
Early August witnessed Harris securing the Democratic nomination after a day of voting among party delegates. It seems she garnered at least 2,350 votes. The quick wrap-up of the nomination process, a rarity in Democratic circles, seems to reveal a desperate move from an insecure party.
Following the announcement of the results, Harris stated that she was ‘honored’ to be the presumptive nominee for the presidency. She thanked the delegates for their work and dedication, perhaps in an attempt to appear connected despite the evident lack of party unity. She continued her preachy monologue, playing the ‘we love our country’ card in an attempt to woo voters. Only time will tell how effective her script is.
Polls in three key swing states show Harris with a marginal lead over Trump, as per a recent New York Times/Siena College poll. The poll dated back from August 5 to 9, suggests a slight edge for Harris; however, it’s common knowledge that these statistics are prone to fluctuations and are often misleading.
These early poll numbers show that if elections were held today, Harris might have a slim advantage with 50% in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, compared to Trump’s 46%. But we all know, polls have been historically wrong when it comes to predicting Trump’s performance.
Nationwide, Harris is leading Trump 42% to 37%, according to an Ipsos poll conducted recently. This survey reveals a further widening of the lead Harris established in a previous Reuters/Ipsos survey, where she was ahead by 37% to Trump’s 34%. But one might not forget, similar polls in the past also predicted a Trump defeat which turned out to be famously incorrect.
The ultimate judgment day of the general election is Tuesday, November 5. As the date approaches, many determine that any lead Harris may hold serves as a false sense of security. After all, poll statistics hardly account for the ground-level dynamism and the populist appeal of a leader like Trump.
