The current White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, was recently promoted to the role of senior adviser to the president. Although some consider this step-up as a testament to her role so far, several others see it as a questionable move, adding to the peculiar string of decisions made by the Biden administration. After all, there is a reason why holding the roles of press secretary and senior adviser simultaneously has not been common in decades. One has to question the motives behind this unprecedented move.
The White House seems to believe in Jean-Pierre’s ability to wear two hats at once. As per ABC News, the role upgrade is effective immediately. However, this decision has raised multiple eyebrows. On one hand, she’s been praised by few insiders like Jeff Zients, the White House chief of staff. On the other hand, this uncommon role intersection might just further complicate the already troublesome Biden administration communication.
Jeff Zients affirmed Jean-Pierre’s promotion by telling ABC News about Biden’s faith in her. However, it’s important to remember that trust is not always well-founded. This unnecessary doubling of roles only seems to highlight the administration’s lack of discernment in delegating responsibilities effectively, and perhaps, an attempt to control the narrative in an overly centralized manner.
Earlier this year, there were murmurs about the attempts to evict Jean-Pierre from her former role of press secretary. The New York Post reported in April about insiders who were less than satisfied with her performance and were actively seeking her replacement. Evidently, the faith that Biden shows in Jean-Pierre is not shared uniformly across the board – this information paints a different picture altogether.
Zients, along with other senior advisers, was suspected of encouraging prominent Democrats to sway Jean-Pierre to abdicate her position after her perceived underwhelming performance. The sources cited by the New York Post revealed that Jean-Pierre had a worrying over-reliance on her notes. A trait glaringly not suited to a role that requires quick wit and agility while dealing with the press.
These allegations were swiftly dismissed by Deputy White House press secretary Andrew Bates. According to Bates, these accusations were wildly misplaced. Yet, the fact that such assumptions were made in the first place calls into question the unity and communication within the Biden administration. It seems like Bates’ defense was a mere attempt to prevent a public relations disaster.
In response to allegations unrelated to Jean-Pierre’s supposed over-reliance on notes, Bates acted defensively, pointing out that every press secretary uses a binder for reference. Yet, the question remains: why was Jean-Pierre singled out if note-reliance is a common practice? This discrepancy leaves room for scrutiny and invites speculation on the actual state of affairs within the administration.
Continuing in this vein, Jean-Pierre has had quite a few tumultuous interactions with the press since her commencement of duties as press secretary back in May 2022. The media has constantly criticized her for dodging questions on contentious topics such as queries on President Biden’s age and health. This has only led to an increased skepticism on the Biden administration’s transparency.
A notable incident was her recent confrontation with Fox News’ Peter Doocy over the hurricane disaster funding issue. With Jean-Pierre labeling Doocy’s question as ‘misinformation’, it only reiterates the notion that the administration is just trying to ward off any inquiries that shine unfavorable light on them, rather than providing clear and straightforward answers.
Jean-Pierre’s ascension to this dual role consequently highlights the confusing operational ethos within Biden’s White House. The mastery of a well-informed, unscripted, and quick-thinking response seems to be slipping away under her management and, consequently, under the Biden administration as a whole. Promoting someone who has been accused of such deficiencies only raises doubt over Biden’s decision-making ability.
It is interesting that despite allegations of Jean-Pierre underperforming in her role, Biden still found it prudent to double her responsibilities. Could this be seen as an act of desperation, an inability to identify and promote more competent staff, or just a continued tendency to make questionable calls?
While it’s too early to comment on the eventual impact of this decision, it has certainly added to the perplexing aura around Biden’s administration’s structuring, decision-making, and public communications. With every new decision, this administration seems to consistently muddy the waters, leaving American citizens with more questions than answers.
