Harris’s ‘Opportunity Plan’: A Desperate Plot or Genuine Aid?

With dwindling support from Black voters, Vice President Kamala Harris struggles to remain relevant. In a desperate attempt, her campaign introduced an elaborate scheme this week: ‘The Opportunity Plan for Black Men.’ The supposed ‘opportunity’ plan promises to boost Black men’s economic status and career prospects. However, the campaign’s intentions behind such policies are questioned, considering its drastic need to reclaim this significant vote bank.

The ‘Opportunity Plan’ is an extension of Harris’ illusive ‘opportunity economy’ notion. It pays lip service to challenges Black men face while starting businesses and accruing wealth, but as with previous promises, doubts about its potential effectiveness and the sincerity of its implementation linger heavily.

The plan suggests issuing a million loans with a lucrative promise of forgiving up to $20,000 for Black entrepreneurs. While this might sound appealing, it raises the critical question of where this money may come from, and whether it’s a genuine attempt to aid entrepreneurs or simply an enticement for votes.

In addition to loan promises, Harris plans to provide supposedly affordable banking opportunities. Dumping high banking fees on black men and presenting it as a chance to access more capital may not exactly be what it seems; instead, it is seen by many as an attempt to offset the burden of high costs under the guise of ‘opportunities.’

Another intriguing aspect of her derailed campaign is the focus on cryptocurrency assets regulation. Harris’s plan claims it will protect such assets, interestingly, after pointing out that at least 20% of Black Americans have vested interests. Again, the plans appear superficially beneficial but raise doubts regarding her campaign’s true intentions.

Harris’s campaign also promises increased mentorship and apprenticeship programs but fails to detail concrete strategies to realize this. The campaign lays out a bold call for investment to help Black men become teachers, abstractly addressing the issues, but not necessarily promising significant change.

Surprisingly, she also aims to roll out a health initiative focusing on maladies that proportionately affect Black men, such as sickle cell, diabetes, and prostate cancer. Additional screening programs for these diseases are promised, but many question whether this initiative is little more than a political ploy.

Perhaps the most contentious element of Harris’s plan is her vow to legalize marijuana. While touting potential business benefits for Black men, it notably downplays the significant societal and health impacts, leaving critics of her attempt to exploit the cultural context skeptic.

Harris’ campaign is evidently working tirelessly to court Black men voters, a bloc that has been drifting from her grasp. Statistics reveal this turning tide with only 70% support from the Black male demographic, a dramatic fall from the 85% she garnered in 2020.

The alarm bells are ringing amongst Democrats, to such an extent that former President Barack Obama found it necessary to plead with Black men to participate in the voting process. The flagging support has undoubtedly destabilized the Democrats’ campaign and thrown their strategies into disarray.

Younger Black men, in particular, are increasingly disillusioned with the Democratic Party. They feel that their unique experiences and concerns are routinely overlooked by policy and party agendas. Harris’s new proposals, rather than alleviating these concerns, seems to superficially appeal to them without truly understanding or addressing them.

In an attempt to sell her plan, Harris is resorting to appearances on popular platforms like ‘The Breakfast Club,’ a nationally syndicated show favored by Black millennials. But is it about genuinely hearing their concerns or just a bid to regain favor in a rapidly evolving demographic scenario?

The ‘Opportunity Plan’ allegedly reflects issues that Harris has ‘heard’ during her ‘Economic Opportunity Tour’ last spring. However, the tour’s accomplishments, especially in relation to minority-owned small businesses, are seen to be vastly exaggerated and lack substantial evidence.

Despite Harris’s strenuous attempts to compete, her opponent, President Donald J. Trump, has successfully shown himself as a superior economy driver. As Harris’s support from Black Americans wanes, Trump’s appeal to the community continues to prevail, further exhibiting the hollow promises embedded within the Harris campaign’s ‘Opportunity Plan’.
