President-elect Donald Trump is stepping up his long-running war with the media by demanding Republicans nix a reporter shield law working its way through Congress.
“REPUBLICANS MUST KILL THIS BILL!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The bill in question is the Protect Reporters from Exploitative State Spying Act, which would guarantee protections against government seizure of reporters’ records. It unanimously passed in the House earlier this year but may now be imperiled in the Senate with just weeks to go before this session of Congress ends.

The ICC May Have to Go Through the United States to Arrest Benjamin Netanyahu
When the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and its former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, it may have unwittingly dragged the United States into the scuffle. Under the terms of the Rome Statute, the ICC’s founding treaty, signatories are bound to arrest and extradite anyone targeted by the ICC.
When Russian President Vladimir Putin was served with an ICC arrest warrant in March 2023 (see International Criminal Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Vladimir Putin and Putin’s War, Week 56. Putin Indicted for War Crimes, Xi Visits Moscow, and Sevastopol Attacked for a Third Time), that effectively ended his travel outside minor client states, Vietnam, North Korea, and China.
Where Netanyahu’s situation differs is that the United States has a law requiring the US government “to use all means necessary and appropriate to bring about the release of any person described in subsection (b) who is being detained or imprisoned by, on behalf of, or at the request of the International Criminal Court.” That law, passed in 2002, is called the American Service-Members’ Protection Act. This law was passed in direct response to potential politically driven ICC indictments of US servicemembers serving in Afghanistan. The law was jokingly referred to as The Hague Invasion Act.
How does this help Netanyahu? The “person described in subsection (b)” also includes our formal and informal allies:
COVERED ALLIED PERSONS- The term `covered allied persons’ means military personnel, elected or appointed officials, and other persons employed by or working on behalf of the government of a NATO member country, a major non-NATO ally (including Australia, Egypt, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Argentina, the Republic of Korea, and New Zealand), or Taiwan, for so long as that government is not a party to the International Criminal Court and wishes its officials and other persons working on its behalf to be exempted from the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.
Any nation attempting to detain Netanyahu would be in direct confrontation with the US. That might not have been a big deal under Biden, but it will be a big deal under Trump. The loss of trade and diplomatic ties, as well as economic sanctions, will probably make the most hardened virtue-signalling, pro-Hamas Karen think twice before trying to arrest Netanyahu or Gallant.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban invited Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday to visit Hungary but several other European nations said the Israeli premier would be detained if he set foot on their soil, following the issuing of an arrest warrant for him.
All EU countries are members of the court, which means they are supposed to enforce its warrants.
“Today I will invite Israel‘s prime minister, Mr. Netanyahu, for a visit to Hungary and in that invite I will guarantee him that if he comes, the ICC ruling will have no effect in Hungary, and we will not follow its contents,” Orban said.

US Intelligence Issues Warning To Defense Industries About Russian Threats
U.S. intelligence agencies urged companies to bolster security amid rising concerns over Russian sabotage activities in Europe.
The advisory pointed out heightened risks for firms supporting Ukraine’s military efforts against Moscow’s ongoing invasion, according to the public bulletin issued by the National Counterintelligence and Security Center. The warning comes after a series of incidents in Europe, which officials attribute to Russian covert operations aimed at undermining Ukraine’s allies.
“Russia’s sabotage activities in Europe increase the risk to U.S. companies abroad and potentially at home,” the officials wrote in the warning. “Such sabotage operations can sow fear and doubt, damage important infrastructure, disrupt commerce, or cause injury and death.”
Recent sabotage cases include arson attacks targeting defense firms and logistics hubs in the United Kingdom and Poland. They also include attempts to compromise public utilities and military installations, the bulletin said. Intelligence officials believe Russian operatives often recruit local criminals to execute these actions, adding a layer of plausible deniability to their activities.

New York judge grants Trump request to file motion to dismiss case, cancels sentencing indefinitely
Judge Juan Merchan on Friday granted President-elect Donald Trump’s request to file a motion to dismiss the charges in New York v. Trump and removed the sentencing date for the president-elect from the schedule.
Merchan said Trump attorneys have until December 2 to file their motion for dismissal. Merchan said Bragg has until December 9 to respond.
Merchan also confirmed the stay in sentencing for Trump, which was requested by both Trump and Bragg attorneys. The sentencing was scheduled for Nov. 26, but on Friday, Merchan said that date “is adjourned.”
Outgoing Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., announced that he will chair the Senate Rules Committee as well as the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense during the 119th Congress.
