An earlier incident in which a New York State Trooper alleged he was shot by a ‘dark-skinned’ man has led to his arrest after an investigation revealed his claims were potentially bogus. The accused trooper, identified as Thomas Mascia, now faces multiple charges including fabricating a crime report and manipulation of evidence, while also being accused of professional misconduct.
In addition to Mascia, his mother and father have been indicted for unlawfully possessing a firearm. All parties involved are scheduled for a court appearance in front of a Nassau County judge on January 27th.
According to the originally reported incident, Mascia claimed to have been shot close to midnight on October 30, precisely around 11:45 p.m. The location of the incident, as cited by him, was near the 17th exit on the Southern State Parkway.
As per Mascia’s claim, the alleged shooter was depicted as a ‘dark-skinned’ man, operating a Dodge Charger with a temporary license plate registered from New Jersey. Following the alleged event, the suspect was said to have fled in the direction of Malverne.
Following the supposed shooting incident, a monetary reward of $15,000 was put forth for any leads that might result in capturing the elusive assailant. Mascia’s medical condition was assessed, treated, and he was discharged afterwards.
In support of capturing the proclaimed shooter, the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association, a union comprised of around 7000 members including active and former troopers throughout the state, added to the initial reward with another $10,000 contribution.
The State Troopers PBA expressed their shock and disappointment over the case stating that the case has caused deep upset amongst their ranks. This statement shared the sentiment of their colleagues who pride themselves in their uniforms and their commitment to upholding justice.
The PBA further emphasized that the troopers consistently face the unspoken understanding of danger in their line of work as part of their sworn duty to guard the safety and wellbeing of all individuals residing in New York.
They also stressed that the reported behavior of one person is in no way representative of the entirety of the committed personnel, and shouldn’t shroud the dedication and positive impact troopers consistently provide towards the state every day in a negative light.
In their statement, the PBA also mentioned their focus remains steadfast, centered on serving the citizens of New York. They concluded by expressing their trust in the justice system to rightfully adjudicate the case.
