Just last fall, sports-talk radio veterans Randy Karraker and Brooke Grimsley were key features of a conventional media platform. Today, though, having experienced a career shift due to budget cuts at WXOS (101.1 FM), they are preparing for a different kind of broadcast adventure. The pair will be joining a modern and innovative new media company that’s slated to launch this Monday.
In this emerging media landscape, Karraker and Grimsley are set to represent Sports Hub STL as its leading hosts. Co-partner Dave Greene advocates that they are about to tread a pioneering path, being part of the market’s first media enterprise focusing on a diverse span of sports-related video content that is exclusively digital.
Sports Hub STL is seeking to tap into a demographic that consumes content differently – the younger audience, a section of viewers who have seamlessly adapted to the world of digital media. The members of the team, including on-screen and off-screen personnel, are either current university students or those who have recently completed their studies.
Notably, the new venture is also planning on incorporating individuals who have been long-standing figures within the industry. Among them are Cardinals commentator Mike Claiborne, Bob Ramsey, who is known for his narrations for the St. Louis University basketball games, sports-radio stalwart Joe Roderick, and accomplished sportscasters like Charlie Marlow, Sara Dayley, and Chris Pelikan.
In efforts to appeal to the evolving demands of content consumption, Sports Hub STL aims to launch two flagship programs. ‘The Randy Karraker Show Featuring Brooke Grimsley’ is one of these, setting to air on weekdays starting at 10 a.m. The radio show hosts plan to tackle a comprehensive range of sporting events and news.
‘Cards Hub 365’ is the second notable program, intended to primarily be about baseball, with Roderick setting the helm. Contributing to the discourse in both of these programs will be a host of former athletes, such as Jamal Mayers, Howard Richards, and Kareem Rush.
Kansas City Chiefs coverage is also on the agenda, projecting a start date before the upcoming NFL season kickstarts. The platform is also gearing up to deliver swift and timely news updates in response to any significant events surrounding local teams.
Sports Hub STL specifically targets the younger end of the sports demographic, aligning with its digital platform and modern content styles. A considerable part of the created content is intended to cover betting within sports, responding to the interests of their target audience.
A significant contributor to and the catalyst behind the creation of Sports Hub STL is Hayden See, a young man of 23 attending the University of Missouri-St. Louis. See has already gained quite a following in the realm of digital sports media, and his youthful perspective and energy will likely drive the content strategy.
Unlike some other platforms, Sports Hub STL is keen to cut out excessive idle talk. The younger audience the platform targets want results, stats, and analysis over gossipy chatter. Their sports news and talk will be all business, all the time.
The founders of Sports Hub STL include Claiborne, alongside Podcast Heat and Dave Zobrist, who is additionally the owner of KFNS (590 AM). The budding company is housed within the facilities of KFNS and has plans to collect approximately $1.5 million from external investors for enhancements to staff, operations, and promotional efforts.
The owners are confident that once the venture is fully functioning and able to demonstrate its potential, there will be even more financial contributors ready to endorse the business. The future seems promising for this innovative new take on sports media, proving that the digital revolution is not skipping the world of sports radio.
Randy Karraker, who has marked over four decades in the traditional radio industry, is particularly excited about this new direction. He appears to be so convinced by the potential of the digital platform that he may not even consider going back to his previous station.
Karraker voices his optimism about the upcoming media outlet in succinct terms, ‘If we do it right, people will find us pretty quickly,’ he said. Given the massive shift towards digital platforms in almost every sphere of life, Karraker’s optimism and Sports Hub STL’s pioneering approach to sports media may just redefine the game.
