It was a highly unusual sight to see Nancy Pelosi turning up at a fancy Hollywood bash in Los Angeles very recently. This was unexpected because such ostentatious displays aren’t typically in the calendars of ball-park 84-year-old former speakers. At the Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2025, which took place at Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts located in Beverly Hills, she was spotted mingling with high-profile celebrities including Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom.
Not only did Pelosi take time from her busy schedule to hobnob with these A-listers, but she also made her presence felt with Amazon titan Jeff Bezos and his fiancee, Lauren Sanchez. Notable other figures she was seen with include comedian Bill Maher, actor Harvey Keitel, and vocalist Debbie Harry.
Pelosi seemed to be getting along fine health-wise, despite her recent hip surgery. Some might remember she required this operation following an unfortunate fall on a marble staircase while on a state visit in luxurious Luxembourg in December. To ensure stability, she opted for sneakers and used a cane at the Sunday night event.
Pelosi’s exorbitant mingling at the event is made more conspicuous by the recent rejection of Kamala Harris by Hollywood’s liberal elites. The latter, known to have secured representation with the influential talent agency CAA, was slated to attend the Academy Awards. Alas, such plans failed to materialize.
Harris seemingly pulled out of making an appearance at the Oscars, putting to rest the whirl of rumors about her surprise attendance at the celebrated event. She offered a pseudo ‘behind-the-scenes’ peek into her usual ‘watch party’ right from her cozy residence instead of gracing the illustrious event with her presence.
It’s worth noting that Pelosi’s Hollywood appearances cap off a turbulent year that included her infamous fall in Luxembourg. It was this fall that led to her having to rely on a walker for mobility. Not the most stylish accessory for a former Speaker.
The sophisticated event she attended served to pay tribute to the brave hearts who tackled the destructive and fatal wildfires that devoured large parts of Los Angeles in January. Harris, prior to becoming a controversial figure, had served as a Democrat senator for the golden state of California.
Whispers are circulating that Harris might contemplate vying for the Governor’s chair in California in the future. After her unsuccessful stint in the Biden administration, a state-level role might be just the ticket for rekindling some semblance of a political career.
Speakers don’t typically use walkers, but Pelosi managed to limp onto the House floor post her hip replacement. This is a far cry from the dynamism you’d expect of our public servants.
While traversing the tricky terrains of the 2024 campaign trail, Pelosi found herself in the crosshairs. She endeavored to keep Trump away from the White House, a mission that wouldn’t be out of place in a Tom Cruise movie. However, this ‘impossible’ effort only produced failure.
As a result of this defeat, Pelosi’s equation with the Biden camp worsened. Her relationship with such long-standing allies understandably shakes when one fails to show the nerve when it matters the most.
We know this because of Jill Biden’s own admission. The first lady voiced her dissatisfaction with her old buddy of 50 years and vocalized this disappointment regarding Pelosi.
If anything, this entanglement of personal and political disappointments is indicative of Pelosi’s declining stock in recent times. It is a fall from grace as marked as her physical descent down that marble staircase.
Given this, Pelosi’s hobnobbing with Hollywood elite feels like an inelegant attempt at relevance by association. A distraction perhaps, from the unfortunate series of events that have come to define her recent political dalliances.
