Disney’s Snow White Remake Takes Lead at Box Office

Disney’s new take on ‘Snow White’ is currently leading the box office. The musical garnered $16 million from both Friday’s showings and early previews in over 4,200 locations. The film, featuring stars like Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, seems to be on course for an opening weekend gross that could exceed $45 million. Assuming forecasts hold, this would position it as the year’s second most successful debut, trailing only another Disney venture, ‘Captain America: Brave New World.’

Directed by Marc Webb, the revamped fairy tale is a sizable investment with a substantial budget exceeding $250 million. This means the film will need to pull in substantial revenues to turn a profit. Yet, Disney’s track record with their other family-focused content has demonstrated potential for significant success in theatrical runs.

‘Mufasa: The Lion King’, a digitally-imagined film that was released just a few months prior, serves as a case in point. Despite initial mixed reviews and an opening of only $35 million, it resonated with audiences both domestically and internationally. It closed its theatrical run with over $250 million domestically and an impressive global gross exceeding $700 million.

However, not all Disney remakes have found the same level of success. The 2019 version of ‘Dumbo’ collected $45 million upon its release and ended up with a global gross of $114 million domestically and $353 million worldwide. Although certainly not a failure, these figures were considered disappointing given the film’s production budget of $170 million, which was notably less than that of ‘Snow White.’

On the audience front, there is a positive sentiment for ‘Snow White,’ despite it becoming the center of an online cultural discourse. Ticket buyers have reported favorable reactions, with the Cinema Score polling service grading the film as ‘B+.’

In contrast, Warner Bros. finds itself hoping for a quick turn of fortunes with their new release, ‘The Alto Knights’. Robert De Niro leads the period drama, playing a dual role of two identical yet unrelated mafia chieftains in New York. The film had a lackluster opening, raking in a mere $1.17 million from both Friday’s showings and previews and was shown in 2,651 theatres.

Like Warner Bros.’ previous release, ‘Mickey 17,’ ‘The Alto Knights’ is an R-rated drama rooted in original content and backed by a well-respected director. However, unlike its predecessor, this film has struggled to draw in audiences. Cinema Score gave it a reserved ‘B’ rating.

Warner Bros. has not had its best month, with March proving particularly challenging. However, the studio is not without prospects for a turnaround. They have high hopes for their upcoming video game adaptation, ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ set for release in the next two weeks.

The remainder of the top five box office leaderboard is comprised mostly of holdovers, with some reshuffling of positions. ‘Black Bag,’ a spy thriller from Focus Features, is expected to fall 43% for its second weekend, still managing to secure the second spot.

‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ another Disney project, makes a comeback to secure the third place. After pulling in $1.1 million on Friday, reports suggest the Marvel film will surpass a total of $190 million on domestic shores alone by the end of Saturday.

Next on the list is Paramount’s comical action film ‘Novocaine,’ which expects to amass $3.8 million over the weekend, bringing its total domestic gross to approximately $15.8 million.

New to the scene is ‘Ash,’ a space horror produced by RLJE and Shudder. The feature, starring Eiza González and Aaron Paul and directed by Flying Lotus, nabbed around $333,000 on its debut day and was screened in more than 1,163 theaters.

Briarcliff Entertainment is also debuting with ‘Magazine Dreams,’ a drama that once rested on Searchlight Pictures’ shelf following lead actor Jonathan Majors’ 2023 assault conviction. The indie film had an opening day gross of approximately $330,000, screened across 815 venues.

In conclusion, the box office remains ever fluctuating, with hits and misses for both old classics and new releases. Nostalgia and innovation continue to battle for audiences’ favor, as performance trends show. However, consistent release of quality content remains a reliable way for filmmakers to draw in crowds, regardless of the property’s age or novelty.
