Matinee idol George Clooney found himself the latest target of acerbic commentary from Former President Donald Trump. It seems Clooney’s television appearance, notably on 60 Minutes, hit a sour note, as Trump derisively scoffed at both the actor and the news feature. Trump categorically dismissed the actor as a ‘inadequately talented film star’ and a ‘unsuccessful political observer,’ giving a palpable sneer to Clooney’s political about-face.
In a twist of commentary, Trump condemned the actor’s erratic political endorsements. He berated Clooney for his haphazard support for President Joe Biden which was quickly abandoned post-debate. The seemingly quick-fire decision wasn’t left unnoticed by Trump, who couldn’t help but satirize this stand.
However, that wasn’t the end of Clooney’s political gymnastics, as he then veered his support to Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump, of course, revelled in the irony of this further floundering of Clooney’s political stance. He claims this move was potentially orchestrated by operatives from Obama’s circle, only to quickly unravel into another tactical blunder.
The former president did not stop there. He used the opportunity to reopen allegations against the 60 Minutes program over its purported skewed representation of an interview with Vice President Harris in 2020. Trump counterposed Clooney’s media clout with the accusations of media misrepresentation, clearly casting a shadow over the actor’s influence.
The subject matter of Clooney’s 60 Minutes interview was largely revolved around his Broadway adaptation of another underwhelming drama, ‘Good Night, and Good Luck.’. This adaptation, centered on the journalist Edward R. Murrow, was used by Clooney as a platform to draw parallels to the current media climate.
Trump’s legal issues with leading media houses like ABC and CBS were cited by Clooney, misconstruing them as pressurizing forces on media. Clooney went on to dubiously champion the role of media as the ‘Fourth Estate’, ostensibly as a check on power, albeit with his own jaundiced perspective.
In his own world, Clooney tried to portray a scenario where the government uses its influence to shrink journalistic voices. The actor’s misguided rhetoric seemed to move towards painting a picture where journalists were made to feel smaller by the government – a notion far from reality.
Clooney’s political narrative took another turn when he brought up his opinion piece for the New York Times, where he brazenly urged Biden to back out of the 2024 race. His reasoning for this audacious move: his surprise upon seeing the president ‘up close’ during a fundraiser.
With the 2024 election looming on the horizon, the long-standing tiff between Hollywood and the former president doesn’t seem to abate. Despite being out of sync with the public perception, Clooney, identified with the democrat party, continues his monotonous harangue.
Trump, facing the actor’s misplaced outbursts, never resists a chance to respond. His cutting criticism of the Hollywood star’s political capriciousness continues to highlight the misaligned thought process within the Democrat circle.
