In the chilly morning of February 2022, Christe Chen, glowing in her immaculate white bridal dress, was a portrayal of joy as she cheerfully greeted Bradley Robert Dawson, her newly wedded spouse. The intimate gathering, in the company of close relatives and friends, signified the culmination of their rapid love journey. Their trails crossed for the first time in November 2021, and by February, just three months later, they were husband and wife. The timing was almost immediate after Dawson, aged 38 then, had legally separated from his previous wife. A surprise for some family members was meeting Dawson the very day of the wedding for the first time.
Following their matrimonial ceremony, the newlyweds relocated to their freshly purchased homestead in Memphis, Tennessee, where they were eager to start their lives together. Before this move, 36-year-old Christe had been a prosperous bakery owner based in Colorado. After completing her pharmacy degree, she integrated into the workforce, successfully securing a position at a grocery store pharmacy. On the other hand, Dawson dedicated his professional efforts in the IT section of a not-for-profit welfare organization, focusing on children’s needs.
Regardless of the surprise that their fast-paced relationship brought along, those who knew Christe well were aware of her longing to settle down and raise a family. All they could do was hope that Christe had finally encountered her other half. The depth of their affection for each other was not a secret; they seemed genuinely absorbed in each other’s world.
In the height of summer, July 2022, they embarked on their long-awaited honeymoon. The trip was a generous present from Chen’s parents. The pair settled on Fiji, nestled in the heart of the South Pacific for their honeymoon trip. What made Fiji a choice destination for the couple is worth noting. Dawson had chosen the same spot for his first marital ceremony in 2019, and Christe had vacationed there with her parents.
Their stay was booked at the luxurious Turtle Island haven, nestled on a private 500-acre expanse in the Yasawa archipelago. The allure of this spot is heightened by its featuring in the acclaimed film, The Blue Lagoon of 1980, starring Brooke Shields. Strikingly, the famous pop sensation Britney Spears also selected it for her honeymoon with her then-spouse Kevin Federline in 2004.
Turtle Island, dedicated solely to adults, and costing a cool $3,500 for an overnight stay, does not host more than 14 couples simultaneously. Its villas are strategically located within steps of the immaculate sandy beaches and glorious clear waters. The stunning hike to the resort typically involves a seaplane ride and opens guests up to extraordinary luxuries including indulgence in personal chef services and butler services. This mesmerizing location was the ultimate setting for the perfect post-wedding getaway.
Their adventure in paradise took a tragic turn two days into their stay. On the 9th of July, the hotel staff raised alarm over the couple’s failure to show up for breakfast and later lunch. Intrigued by their unusual absence, a staff member decided to check their villa, locally referred to as a ‘bure’ in Fiji.
What met this staff was dreadful, to say the least. Christe’s lifeless body was discovered in the bathroom wedged in the compact space aligning the toilet and the wall. The tank top was shattered. Her body bore signs of a severe struggle with blood smeared all over, and severe injuries including a blunt force trauma to her head and face lacerations were visible. On the other hand, Dawson was mysteriously missing, suggesting a possible escape.
Witnesses narrated that the couple had attended an evening social event the previous night. The evening was drowned in drinks and it was reported that a heated argument broke out between them as they departed. Disturbing sounds were later heard emanating from their villa.
In the quest to locate Dawson, the police stumbled upon the fact that he had taken a kayak and somehow managed to reach another island about a mile away. He was swiftly arrested. In his possession, the police found personal items, cash, and his passport pointing towards a possible flight plan.
Initially, on receiving the horrifying news of Christe’s demise, authorities and family were in denial, suspecting it could be a sick prank. The painful reality, however, hit home when the actual shocking truth was established. Even more distressing for the family was the gruesome state of Christe’s remains, making it impossible for her to be embalmed for transportation back to the US. The devastating situation left them with no other option but to have her cremated in Fiji.
December 2024 marked Dawson’s trial in Fiji. His narrative was that he had taken the kayak to another island in a bid to give his spouse some space after their disagreement. But the prosecution was not convinced. They postulated that Dawson had intentionally packed belongings, intending to escape. They further asserted that he purposely left behind his GPS watch and phone in an attempt to elude tracking.
In a turn of events, the defense countered that the evidence against Dawson was insufficient to incriminate him for homicide. They emphasized that Dawson was not in the process of escaping but instead proposed that Christe’s shocking death had been an unintended incident.
The trial ended after a week with Dawson proclaimed guilty of homicide. The judge was unequivocal that Dawson was the actual perpetrator and that no other person could have carried out such an atrocity. The judge declared in his statement, ‘After thorough scrutiny of all the pieces of evidence, I am persuaded that the prosecution has fulfilled their mandate to prove, with no reasonable doubt, that Dawson committed the murder.’
In the subsequent month, February, the Fijian justice system awarded Dawson a life imprisonment verdict. According to the ruling, he would have to serve a minimum of 18 years jail term prior to getting a potential pardon. The judge expressed disgust over Dawson’s conduct after the horrifying incident, vehemently condemning him.
Further, the judge rebuked Dawson highlighting, ‘When you inflicted the grievous and potentially lethal injuries on the deceased, you did not only flee the crime scene but also left her alone and helpless in your bure.’ This harsh reprimand pointed towards the receding tide of sympathy for Dawson, marking a grim conclusion to the initially joyful union that was their marriage.
