Biden’s Cognitive Decline: Media’s Deceiving Role in Presidential Election

Taking part in a conference at Yale Law School on the freedom of speech in crisis and the boundaries of the First Amendment was rather enlightening, particularly the panel concerning our collective media’s environment. A debate on the hypertensive issue of the potential for recalibration in the media, as well as the bridging role of public opinion within the constitution’s role in the era of evolving media, was the core focus. The transition of the mainstream media into a vessel of mass deceit during the 2024 presidential campaign seems to have bolstered the current administration’s path toward victory. The slow response of reputed media groups to this wave of misinformation solidified its impact on the voters.

The imperative concern in the aftermath of these instances is a rigorous focus on whether we can, and indeed should, overhaul the existing media system. Unveiling the seemingly concealed decline in President Biden’s cognitive capacity—a finding considerably highlighted by a debate held on June 27, 2024—is of significant importance. The aftermath of this reveal was a rush to secure an alternative candidate and to canvass support. The prior administration’s continued shroud over Biden’s deteriorating mental prowess essentially permitted misguiding news to prosper, systematically tinging the electoral process.

The growing necessity for a more visible and fortified media system cannot be stressed enough based on these events. As this already dangerous precedent makes clear, a weak media system can potentially come at the detriment of democracy. The most substantial, yet largely overshadowed revelation of the election campaign, President Biden’s mental failing, was notably washed over by a number of media outlets that we count on for vital information.

Consequences of the alleged cognitive impairment of President Biden, if valid, would extend far beyond his re-election chances. Most importantly, it would wildly influence his decision-making capabilities while in office. But the few media outlets that did call attention to evidence supporting Biden’s likely incompetence were silenced by the dismissive reactions of others. As of June 2024, video clips portraying a clearly bewildered Biden were casually discarded as fraudulent accusations by the White House and a large section of his supporters.

This highly questionable incident severely puts to test the media’s fulcrum role in revealing and broadcasting truths. Intentionally deceiving the public is not a commendable act for a journalist, but a stark contradiction of their responsibility to both seek and allow access to the truth. The complicity of certain media organizations in promoting this false portrayal compromised their credibility drastically.

Why did such a lapse occur? It can be arguable that the media intentionally skated around the truth, possibly due to an ideological bias favoring President Biden. A resistance towards conflicting narratives that do not validate pre-existing political preferences is partially to blame. One can’t help but conjecture how differently the media would have reacted if the candidate in question was a Republican in 2024.

This event brings into the limelight the necessity for media organizations to reassess their biases and recognize the urgency for a more diversified media system. Employing a more eclectic mix of ideologically varied reporters and editors might be the derivatives needed for a balanced and unbiased news report.

However, the task of achieving this vital change is quite daunting, rendered even more complex by legal restrictions and the imminent peril of personal biases. It is our duty to strive towards a media system that is grounded in truth, respect for diverse viewpoints, and encourages open discourse. By renewing their commitment to impartial reporting, newspapers can provide a fair platform to voice arguments from all sides of the narrative.

Yet, we recognize that this solution is far from flawless, with the cure potentially posing more harm than the disease itself. It is hard to refute our current system’s perception as ‘a deeply flawed media system.’ These critical vulnerabilities in the media have inhibited the necessary checks on government malfeasance.

By failing to effectively counter and expose misinformation from one movement, while frantically trying to resist another, the media system has indirectly played into the hands of a candidate and a movement widely deemed perilous. Somehow, these faults of the current system have ended up undermining themselves, demonstrating a profound need for a renewed, unbiased, and robust media system.
