Dems Slam Elon Musk, Melania Trump with Xenophobic Attacks: ‘Go Back to South Africa!’

Several prominent Democrats are facing criticism for what many are calling blatantly xenophobic remarks targeting First Lady Melania Trump and Elon Musk, the South African-born head of the Department of Government Efficiency and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX.

The controversy erupted after multiple Democratic lawmakers made inflammatory comments questioning the legitimacy and loyalty of both Musk and Melania Trump—statements that critics argue fly in the face of the party’s supposed commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) took direct aim at Melania Trump, bizarrely suggesting that the First Lady’s immigration status should be investigated and even questioning the documentation of her parents, despite the fact that Melania became a U.S. citizen in 2006. Her remarks were quickly denounced as mean-spirited and hypocritical.

Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) made headlines for suggesting that Elon Musk “should go back to South Africa,” a remark many have condemned as xenophobic and racially charged. The criticism escalated further when Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) implied that Musk’s upbringing in apartheid-era South Africa was somehow responsible for his alleged “fascist” tendencies—a baseless and inflammatory claim that critics argue amounts to a personal smear based on heritage.

The backlash has been swift. Conservatives and free speech advocates alike are calling out the clear double standard: while the Democratic Party routinely accuses Republicans of xenophobia for defending border security or enforcing immigration law, its own members are now openly attacking immigrants who don’t fit their ideological mold.

“These attacks are not just inappropriate—they’re un-American,” said one Trump administration official. “To target individuals based on where they were born, simply because they don’t agree with your politics, is the exact definition of the intolerance Democrats claim to oppose.”

Elon Musk, who legally immigrated to the United States and became a U.S. citizen in 2002, has long been a vocal critic of government inefficiency and overregulation. Under President Trump, he has taken a leading role in streamlining federal agencies and cutting waste—making him a target for left-wing lawmakers and bureaucratic insiders.

Melania Trump, likewise, has kept a relatively low political profile, focusing on issues like child welfare and family. But as the First Lady and a legal immigrant, she now finds herself in the crosshairs of Democrats who appear to have no problem wielding xenophobic rhetoric when it suits them.

The incident has reignited the debate about the real meaning of “diversity” and “inclusion” in American politics. Is it only extended to those who toe the progressive line? And what does it say about a party that preaches tolerance, but stoops to personal attacks based on national origin the moment someone steps out of line?

For many, the message is clear: the Democrats’ commitment to inclusivity ends where their political opposition begins. And in their desperation to tear down President Trump and those around him, they’re revealing a troubling willingness to abandon the very values they claim to defend.
