Illinois holds the dubious distinction of the second-most hazardous state for public transportation, recording an incident rate of 13.3 per 100,000 users. Minnesota trailed close by with an average of 11 incidents, whereas Massachusetts and Pennsylvania had rates of 8.1 and 4.9, respectively. These figures underline the extent to which New York’s public transport system exceeds the danger level in these other states.
Interestingly, California, despite having the most transit-related fatalities (31) among all states, merely recorded a rate of 4.4 hazardous incidents per 100,000 riders. This surprising disparity accentuates the relative riskiness of New York’s public transportation when compared to its counterparts across the nation.
On the other end of the spectrum, public transport in Arizona and Washington were considered the least dangerous, each recording only 2.6 incidents per capita. These states exemplified a safer public transit environment compared to other regions across the United States.

The subway system experienced an overall 18% drop in crime, reaching the second-lowest crime rate in 27 years, pointing to perhaps better other aspects of public security.
