Aged 78 and with two unsuccessful assassination attempts behind him while on the campaign trail, past president Donald Trump recently underwent his yearly physical examination. Rather enigmatically, Trump delayed the disclosure of the examination’s result until Sunday. He has, however, asserted to the media aboard Air Force One en route to Florida, ‘I sensed a very well state of health within me.’ The ex-president proclaimed he underwent a mental cognition assessment, of which he passed with flying colors, answering all questions flawlessly.
The yearly health examination of the former president took place at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. This is the very place where Trump was admitted for Coronavirus treatment back in 2020. The course of the appointment this time was not notably lengthy, consuming a little over four hours of Trump’s Friday.
While campaigning in July of the past year, a 20-year-old armed individual attempted to disrupt a Butler, Pennsylvania rally, aiming at Trump. The bullet-Twitch incident ended with the top part of Trump’s right ear being injured. Shortly afterward, he was seen at the Republican National Convention wearing a notable white bandage on the said ear during his acceptance of the presidential nomination of his party.
Soon, another threat to the then-president’s life surfaced when a Secret Service agent discovered a man, armed with a rifle, skulking around in a bush near Trump’s golf club located in West Palm Beach, Florida. Despite facing such severe challenges, Trump, known for his passion for golf and a surprising penchant for fast food, had faithfully shared his ongoing medication to reduce his cholesterol levels during his preceding term.
It falls typically within the White House’s prerogative to determine what data gets publicized from the health exam of the president. There are no stringent obligations for Trump to disclose any health data, and, indeed, the reporting method of a president’s health exam lacks a standardized protocol. During his presidential hunts, Trump chose to maintain a veil of discretion around his health most of the time.
On the election battleground of 2024, Trump famously lambasted his predecessor Biden, now into his 82nd year, for his feeble age and, according to Trump, a tangible lack of energy. Reflecting on Trump’s first term, a White House physician, back in 2018, described Trump’s overall health as ‘excellent,’ although he suggested that Trump could benefit from shedding some weight and advocated a daily exercise regimen.
As a component of his very first-term annual health check, Trump went through a Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Later, his doctor’s revelation to the public was that Trump had achieved a perfect score of 30 out of 30. While Trump’s achievement is notable, recent publications have painted a worrisome picture by casting a harsh light on the mental aptitude of Joe Biden, particularly during his concluding period in the White House.
Last year’s election brought to the forefront the issue of mental health and age of Trump and Biden. It emerged as a persistent point of debate, especially in the aftermath of Biden’s lackluster showdown with Trump in June. Around the same time, Trump occasionally presented disjointed speeches at rallies, which became an easy target for naysayers.
Interestingly, while the mental abilities and fitness of Joe Biden were questioned frequently, Kamala Harris managed to wave away such concerns despite being an integral part of the administration. Many called this blind faith and argued that, if anything, her position demands constant scrutiny and interrogation as much as any other top-tier politician. The unquestioning acceptance projected by her supporters had far-reaching consequences, making it difficult to have earnest dialogues.
Despite his age and health concerns, Trump continued to show an extreme level of energy and zest in his various public appearances and speeches. Shrouded in the relative secrecy of his health data, he stood as a sharp contrast to Biden, who repeatedly struggled to convey his thoughts coherently.
Under close inspection, Biden’s performance standards have seen a visible decrease over the period of his term, making the choice of his reelection questionable in many eyes. There is a rising sentiment that Biden’s inability to decisively articulate his policies reflects a lack of conviction, often leaving the public unconvinced about the broader vision for the nation.
Turning a blind eye to incompetency and inefficiency only makes the process of accountability more challenging. As important as it is to criticize and scrutinize Trump’s handling of his position, we must also recognize the glaringly obvious flaws in the leadership style of Biden and Kamala Harris.
In the realm of contemporary American politics, power lies in public perception. The ability to sway the public seems to involve less substance and more persuasion, often leading to the glorification of unworthy politicians. A prime example of this is the uncritical acceptance of Kamala Harris, irrespective of her questionable performance.
Regardless of how we may view Trump’s presidency or Biden’s reign, it is inadequate to solely focus on nitpicking one side. It is destructive for a democracy when political discourse is filled with biases that favor or ridicule one figure based on one-sided perspectives. Observing these issues objectively is our duty as aware citizens.
Taking the entirety of the political landscape into account, it is clear that neither Trump nor Biden are devoid of their distinctive list of flaws. However, the constant scrutiny and criticism voiced against Trump has significantly overshadowed the weaknesses of Biden and Harris. Consequently, it becomes essential to reconsider our perceptions and biases, allowing for a fairer critique of all those in positions of power.
