Pennsylvania Governor’s Home Torched in Arson Attack

An individual suspected of arson, accused of igniting a blaze at the residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro during the initial evening of Passover, confessed his dislike towards the governor to the law enforcement authorities. Cody Balmer, aged 38, reported that he would have physically assaulted the governor using a hammer, given the chance, as per the details listed in a criminal complaint.

According to the information released by the Harrisburg police department, Balmer has been indicted with multiple charges. The charges range from criminal homicide and aggravated assault to aggravated arson, burglary, and terrorism, among others, stated in the criminal litigation. Balmer was taken to the hospital on Monday to undergo treatment for a health condition, after the incident, which is not believed to be related to the alleged attempt or his subsequent apprehension.

Balmer openly admitted to law enforcement officials that he had taken gasoline from a lawn mower, filling two empty bottles of Heineken beer with it. These bottles were later repurposed as improvised incendiary devices known as Molotov cocktails, as per the details in the criminal complaint.

He was reported to have journeyed on foot for an hour from his residence to Shapiro’s property. Upon reaching the governor’s house, he climbed over the boundary fence, broke two windows using a hammer, and tossed the Molotov cocktails inside.

The investigative officials reportedly discovered the evidence of the two shattered Heineken beer bottles, filled with gasoline, inside the living room of the governor. The criminal complaint further elaborates that Balmer ‘forcibly intruded’ into the governor’s home in the early hours of Sunday.

This invasion took place a few hours post the departure of guests who had been invited over to Governor Shapiro’s home for Passover celebration. It was during this time that he utilized the homemade pyrogenic devices to set the house on fire while the governor and his family were asleep.

Law enforcement authorities have classified this attack to be intentional, although the intentions behind this act have still not been revealed to the public.

Following the incident, Balmer’s arrest occurred just a few days prior to his scheduled appearance in court for a hearing on a guilty plea connected with an unrelated case. This previous case involves a charge of simple assault dating back to 2023.

Records also confirm that Balmer had entered a guilty plea in 2016 for yet another unrelated case, involving charges of forgery and theft by deceit.

In the aftermath of his arrest, Balmer’s mother, Christie Balmer, stated that her son had been dealing with mental health issues and had recently stopped taking his prescribed medications.

She elaborated further, saying she made efforts to have authorities ‘pick up’ her son. Despite reaching out to four different police departments, she expressed that she was unable to secure any aid for her son.

During a statement about the attack, Governor Shapiro, of Jewish faith, showed visible emotion when talking about the incident that took place at his home in the early morning hours while his family was asleep indoors.

The incident happened shortly after the house had been filled with friends and family for the first night of the Passover celebration. Governor Shapiro sent out a strong message stating, ‘If he was trying to terrorize our family, our friends, the Jewish community, who joined us for a Passover Seder in that room last night, hear me on this: We celebrated our faith last night, proudly, and in a few hours, we will celebrate our second Seder of Passover.’

The governor’s statement reiterated his and his family’s strength and determination, highlighting that despite the traumatic event, they had managed to uphold and celebrate their faith.

In the wake of the horrific incident, the complete evacuation of the residence was successfully carried out without anyone being injured.

The alleged attack on Governor Shapiro’s residence stands as a stark reminder of the constant threats involved with public service, as law enforcement continues their ongoing investigation into the incident.
