Out of Touch: Biden Fails to Acknowledge the Perennial Issues Plaguing Social Security

A bewildering assertion was thrown towards a group of advocates for disabled individuals during a recent gathering, which suggested that Social Security beneficiaries may face the unprecedented event of not receiving their monthly benefits. The cautionary message was courtesy of none other than former President Joe Biden. He stated, ‘In the nine decades since the implementation of the Social Security system by Franklin Roosevelt, citizens have invariably been on the receiving end of their Social Security remittances. These payments have unfailingly reached beneficiaries in various stages of economic and social upheaval such as warfare, economic downturns, and even during the recent pandemic. The possibility that this perennial system might hit a snag for the first time is a thought that could spell disaster for countless households.’

Biden’s speech marked his first public speaking event post his tenure at the White House. Despite his attempts at somber solemnity, observers noted the same Biden-isms all too familiar from his time in office. His subsequent presence in Washington, initially for meetings regarding his post-presidential career and occasional rewards from loyal unions like the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, resulted in a measured reduction in his political interactions. He replaced his frequent political jousting with long pasta dinners and a focus on recounting his legacy.

During his stay at the White House, Biden tried to leave a legacy that Democrats always describe with exaggerated hype. They cite his tax credit schemes that supposedly resulted in the least number of impoverished children in the history of the United States. They also laud his exorbitant spending designed supposedly to alleviate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the huge clean-energy sector subsidies for American businesses, and the supposed creation of over 16 million jobs.

But amongst all the self-praise and self-presumed accomplishments, Biden seemed to be oblivious to the obvious perils his predecessors and his administration had created for Social Security. In his speech at the Advocates, Counselors, and Representatives for the Disabled conference in Chicago, he highlighted how Social Security, aided by the elderly and disabled beneficiaries numbering around 73 million, was heading towards an imminent showdown brought about by the Republicans’ move to seek funds for the program via Congress-approved extensive and unspecified spending cuts.

Additionally, Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, led by the innovative Elon Musk, had previously implemented a reduction of 10% in the Social Security Administration and shut down numerous regional offices. These moves, stated to be essential for sustainable efficiency, were completely missing from Biden’s narrative. One must wonder why he omitted such significant actions. Could it be because it’s easier to lay blame elsewhere?

Musk, a well-known critic of wasteful spending, characterized Social Security as ‘the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time’. According to him, cuts to automatic spending regimes needed to be a part of the solution, an idea that was conveniently labeled by Democrats as an attack on Social Security. However, the White House reframed Musk’s assertion and insisted it was aimed at unnecessary expenditure and fraud in the system, a hint the Democrats conveniently chose to disregard.

As Biden stood on the podium yearning for approval with his distorted tale of the Social Security crisis, one was left with the impression that the Democrats were more interested in whipping up frenzy about threats to Social Security than in addressing its underlying issues. They seemed to have conveniently forgotten the role that past administrations had played in creating the crisis and blamed Republicans instead.
