It was evident that celebrity basketball player, LeBron James, threw in his lot with Kamala Harris, the former Vice President, in the 2024 US Presidential race against Donald Trump. While no one was surprised by this commitment, considering his historically negative opinions about Trump’s first tenure, the illusion of objectivity went out of the window.
In an act of overt partisanship in the week leading up to the election, James used his immense public following to drum up support for Harris. One could argue that it was a desperate attempt from Harris’ campaign side to leverage the mass appeal of a popular sports figure to sway voters.
Interestingly, a $50,000 transaction from Harris to the Springhill Entertainment company, co-founded by James and his long-term business associate Maverick Carter, came under scrutiny soon after. The stated purpose of this remittance? ‘Campaign event production.’ Looking at the timing of it all seems to hint at the transaction being more than just a pure business deal.
On January 28th, more than two months after the November 5th election, Fox News broke the news of this questionable move. Many were quick to question why the payment was made at such a delayed interval post the election. The timing of the payment left room for speculation about the real motives behind the move.
It’s also noteworthy that James, along with a plea for his fans to vote for Harris, shared a controversial video of a minute and fifteen seconds long. The video featured several contentious statements from Trump on various topics, primarily ones related to race. This tactic of using slanted narration did little to highlight any viable political merits of Harris’ candidacy.
One of the recurring themes in the video? ‘Hate takes us back.’ The statement felt ironic given James’ own history of expressing vitriolic criticism and hate for Donald Trump. It leaves us wondering if there is more to this narrative than what meets the eye.
As we delve into the past, it turns out that James has been quite the vocal critic of Donald Trump. His animosity was on full display in 2017 after the Golden State Warriors’ NBA Finals win when player Steph Curry refused the customary White House visit. Trump’s reactionary withdrawal of the offer was met with an equally reactive response from James, who dubbed him a ‘bum.’
This incident was but one of many occasions where James hasn’t hesitated to take potshots at Trump publicly. His impulsive critiques appear to be a determined strategy rather than occasional outbursts, with the intention to malign Trump’s reputation through various interviews.
The intensity of his disdain for Trump was further displayed through his reaction to Trump’s November win. Using his social media platform, James made a spectacle of his disappointment while proclaiming a rather self-righteous promise to his daughter: ‘HEAVY ON MY HEART & MIND THIS AM MY PRINCESS !! PROMISE TO PROTECT YOU WITH EVERYTHING I HAVE AND MORE!! WE DONT NEED THEIR HELP!’
This statement was eerily similar to the patronizing sentiment he shared in 2016 after Trump’s first-time win. He advised his followers back then to hold onto hope that somehow, things would turn around. The lack of acceptance of democratic process was evident in his barely concealed resentment.
Throughout the entire narrative, one has to question if LeBron James’s harsh stance on Trump is for the betterment of the nation or just personal bias, or even worse, driven by financial transactions. For someone ushering to rise above hate, his speeches and actions may seem contradictory.
What seems evident is that Harris’ campaign was playing a high-stakes game, levering James’ fame to attract younger audiences, and seemingly going to some lengths to ensure it. The hefty $50,000 payment is an indicator of the importance placed on celebrity endorsements in political campaigns, irrespective of how genuine these endorsements might be.
To use popular celebrities to influence the public opinion in electoral campaigns is a strategy that isn’t new, but one wonders how effective it actually is. And whether it is ethical to the voters or not. It does leave a substantial question on the true nature of candidacies and elections.
Given all this, it’s quite clear that James has been a tool for the Democrats’ elaborate strategy to shape public sentiment. If negative events were to unfold under a Biden-Harris administration, one could question the extent of responsibilty James would bear, having used his influence to sway the public opinion during the electoral race.
