The once proud figurehead, ex-Governor Andrew Cuomo is eyeing a continuously faltering mayoral bid for New York City. Too many disturbing skeletons tumble out of his closet, in the backdrop of a national backdrop, causing quite the unrest among several sections of the society.
According to The Daily Beast, Cuomo perceives that left-wing figureheads like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont are taking undue advantage of the apprehensions cemented by President Donald Trump. They seem to be drawing considerable crowds during their dubious ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ rallies, despite the inherent misgivings.
Amid this, the Democratic Party has seemingly lost its footing, in their overzealous attempt to contain Trump’s influence. ‘There’s a palpable outrage directed towards Trump within the party,’ Cuomo conceded during The Daily Beast podcast, which might be more reflective of the party’s own impotence rather than any grandiose political strategy.
Cuomo, the erstwhile three-term governor, made no bones about the turbulence within the country, a result of the ‘chaos’ peddled by the incumbent president. An atmosphere of ‘fear’ and ‘anger’ now prevails — a fact that AOC and Sanders are exploiting to the hilt.
Cuomo, however, took a startlingly harsh stand on the Democratic Party’s dismal position in the wake of Vice President Kamala Harris’ bitter loss against Trump in the recent presidential race. ‘We have to confront the painful truth,’ Cuomo suggested. ‘The Democratic Party is grappling with deep-seated issues.’
Upon being inquired whether the party is relegated to the fringes due to an insistent focus on cultural issues, Cuomo’s reply was remarkably self-incriminating. ‘We have only ourselves to blame. We’ve been dismissed by our base. We’ve squandered our grounding,’ he acknowledged.
Cuomo emphasized the Democratic Party’s incapacity to mount a significant challenge against Trump. ‘Trump has effectively cornered us,’ he admitted, revealing an apparent lack of resilience within the party. ‘We’re consistently on the defensive, always picking up the pieces.’
Cuomo further urged the demoralized Democrats to diligently address the adverse implications of Trump’s governance. ‘Democrats need to openly admit that people have been rightly captivated by Trump’s charisma and zeal,’ he stated. Even then, the eccentric leadership has induced grave damage, as Cuomo pointed out.
Earlier this month, Cuomo went a step further to dub Trump even more ‘sinister’ in his second term than his initial stint as the president. This, unsurprisingly, was met with swift retort from Trump.
Trump countered by asserting a cordial relationship with Cuomo for years, a camaraderie that withstood even the brunt of the global health crisis. However, the cracks are glaringly visible, reflecting the discord within the party, and its desperate struggle to get back on its feet.
The Democrats’ frequent reference to the ills of Trump’s reign may seem like an attempt to deflect attention from the apparent lack of unity and leadership. Coupled with Kamala Harris losing the presidential race, the party finds itself on thin ice with a long way to go.
Cuomo, who used to be a prominent player within the party, finds himself lost amidst scandals and lost credibility. Instead of tackling key crisis within the party, he seems more interested in adding fuel to the fire of opposing party members.
Meanwhile, prominent figures like AOC and Sanders continue to stir the pot with their radicalized rhetoric, appealing to the fears and disarray of the public. While they paint this as a fight against oligarchy, many see it as a strategy of their own political gain.
With the Democratic party spiraling into chaos, the focus should be on reinstating trust and unity within the party. Yet, Cuomo’s recent statements seem to be further plunging the party into deeper strains and tensions.
Is this truly the state of the Democratic Party? A lack of unity, leadership, and clear focus? With the shadow of Kamala Harris’ loss still lingering, the party must re-evaluate its strategies, else risk falling into further disarray.
Only time will tell if the Democratic party is capable of rising from these ashes of internal strife. Can they regain the trust of their base and provide a solid front against Trump? This is a question that only the upcoming elections can answer.
