Harris Attends Met Gala Amid Gaza Crisis: Tone Deafness on Display

In an act that many perceived as insensitive, Kamala Harris, the former vice president, attended a high-profile event in New York City during a critical time. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s high-end gala witnessed her presence at a time when the Democratic Party is undergoing mounting criticisms due to their unfailing support for Israel amidst the hostilities in Gaza. The party, led by the Biden administration, has seen its popularity dwindle to all-time lows.

In a tone-deaf publicity effort, the official Democrat’s account even shared a photo of Harris en route to the event, which only catalysed more criticism. According to a CNN report, the Democratic Party’s approval rating has plummeted, a reflection of its controversial stances and apparent disregard for conflicts overseas. Harris, making a glamorous appearance while Gaza continues to be ravaged by war, merely added fuel to the fire.

The criticism escalated to the point where Harris was condemned for not advocating for a ceasefire during her tenure. Amid the opulence of the Met Gala, the visual comparison of her to former President Lyndon B Johnson beside impoverished Americans in Kentucky was jarring, resulting in wistful comments about how far we have strayed.

Not just Harris, but the Met Gala itself bore the brunt of public outrage. Not only was it seen as profiting from a situation steeped in humanitarian crisis, but it maintained a disturbing silence about the ongoing events. For the second year in a row, a glamorous event played out while a war-ravaged Gaza suffered.

Gaza has experienced large scale losses, with deaths in thousands in the past year, and a once thriving population of over two million languishes in famine as Israel’s blockade results in a cessation of food and humanitarian aid. With over 52,000 Palestinians having lost their lives since October 2023, the indifference of the elites is shockingly conspicuous.

The New York City-based group, Within Our Lifetime, organized a protest outside the Metropolitan Museum, bringing much-needed visibility to the hemorrhaging crisis in Gaza. ‘While celebrities joyously flaunt their fortune and materialism, not a single food or aid truck has entered Gaza for two months, resulting in a large-scale famine among the Palestinian populace,’ the group posted.

While celebrities paraded in luxury at the Met Gala, online denizens crafted a poignant narrative using images of the suffering in Gaza. Kim Kardashian and Gigi Hadid, among others, became jarring contrasts to the malnourished children and the horrors of war.

An insightful post from a Palestinian social media user succinctly captured the irony, ‘We are losing family and friends left and right. But yes, please show us your favorite wealthy celebrities wearing expensive clothes designed by other rich people.’ This captured the stark disconnect between the oblivious celebrities and the real-world troubles faced by others.

One netizen pondered if this year’s gala theme, a revolutionary fashion movement in Black American history, was a diversion attempt to dilute the heavy backlash the event faced in 2024. A boycott campaign had been launched last year against celebrities who attended but had not publicly shown support for Palestine – the echoes of which could be heard this year as well.

The reduced backlash this year in no way signifies a decrease in the issue’s gravity. Many continue to voice the same concerns that originally sparked the outrage, dubbing the selective empathy displayed by the event attendees and organizers as ‘selective humanity.’

The war in Gaza, which started in October 2023 after attacks led by Hamas on southern Israel, has resulted in devastating losses. Over 52,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 118,000 injured, with many still missing and presumed dead among the ruinous rubble of Gaza. Yet, amid the dancing and partying at the Met Gala, one would hardly know of the turmoil brewing elsewhere.

This deliberate blindness on part of the former vice president and the elite party attendees illuminates the troubling disconnect that dominates our contemporary political landscape. Demonstrating a complete disregard for the humanitarian crisis unrolling in real-time, the ‘elite’ continue to live in their constructed bubble – detached and indifferent.
