Illinois Man Charged with Attempted Kidnapping at Buffalo School

On Wednesday, legal proceedings were initiated against a man from Illinois, aged 30, for allegations of attempting to kidnap a minor from a school located in Buffalo. The Illinois resident stood before the Erie County court on Wednesday, charged with orchestrating a kidnap attempt at a Buffalo school earlier this year. Shane K. Cronin, now 30, finds himself facing multiple serious charges. These include an Attempted Kidnapping Second Degree charge (a class ‘C’ violent felony), Burglary in the Third Degree (class ‘D’ felony), and Attempted Luring of a Child, Attempted Assault in the Second Degree (both class ‘E’ felonies), as well as Endangering the Welfare of a Child (classed as a ‘A’ misdemeanor).

The local Buffalo police force received a call on the 11th of February, 2025, that an unauthorized intruder had made his way into the Charles R. Drew Science Magnet School. This intruder was allegedly involved in an assault. The accused, Cronin, is believed to have entered the school without permission with the objective of committing a crime. He was not granted any permission to be within the school premises and it was during this unauthorized entry that he reportedly approached two students in the corridors.

Cronin stands accused of making an attempt to entice and kidnap one of the students present in the educational institution. As per the statement released by the Erie County District Attorney’s office, Cronin was seen by a school employee interacting with the students in the corridor. The staff member directed him to leave the school premises immediately.

Shane K. Cronin reportedly responded aggressively to the request, attempting to hit the staff member’s face with his fist and tried to push them onto the floor. When a security member from the school stepped in, Cronin allegedly dashed out of the school. A brief while after this episode, Cronin was arrested and kept in custody. Owing to the charges against him, he has been denied bail after having his case heard in Buffalo City Court in February.

Cronin is expected to reappear in court for a pretrial conference that is scheduled to take place in June. The court has chosen to extend his current situation of bail denial. In the event of a conviction in court, Cronin might be looking at the prospect of a maximum sentence of 15-years behind bars.

Adding to the case’s complexity, the Erie County District Attorney has responded to allegations levied by a member of the Buffalo Police Department, who has accused the Buffalo School District of obscuring potential instances of abuse and assault that implicated students. Strongly refuting claims about hiding any abuses or assaults that involves students, the school district is nonetheless moving ahead with a third party investigation to make sure the concerns are properly addressed.
