President Donald Trump didn’t hold back during a press briefing aboard Air Force One, firing back at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for his recent criticism over the Qatari government’s gift of a $400 million Boeing 747-8 aircraft to the United States.
Trump, addressing reporters, said of Schumer, “I’ve known him a long time—something’s not right. He’s lost his confidence. There’s something wrong with him.” The remarks came after Schumer slammed the decision to accept the jet, calling it a “grave national security threat” and demanding an ethics investigation into what he portrayed as an improper foreign gift.
The aircraft, however, is being used as a temporary replacement for Air Force One and will be turned over to Trump’s presidential library once retired from service. Trump has repeatedly emphasized that the plane is not a personal gift and will remain U.S. government property throughout its use. He also noted that the move would save taxpayers millions of dollars by offsetting maintenance costs associated with aging presidential aircraft.
“The American people win with this deal. It’s cost-effective, and it’s being used to serve the country,” Trump said. “Only a Democrat would try to turn that into a scandal.”
Despite some bipartisan grumbling, Trump’s administration maintains that the transaction was thoroughly vetted and entirely legal. The aircraft is already undergoing retrofitting to meet U.S. military and communications standards and is expected to be operational later this year.
The dustup highlights the ongoing tension between Trump and Democratic leadership as the 2028 campaign season looms. While Democrats like Schumer continue to raise alarm over optics, Trump is keeping his focus on delivering strategic, cost-effective outcomes—at home and abroad.
With his signature mix of bluntness and confidence, Trump made it clear: he’s not taking lectures on ethics from a party that’s spent years embroiled in double standards. “Chuck’s been in Washington too long,” he quipped. “It’s starting to show.”
