Mayhem in Port Richmond: Divante Pitt Faces Grave Charges

On an eventful Sunday evening of May 11, 2025, in Port Richmond, a man named Divante Pitt, aged 31, had a calamitous encounter with law enforcement. Numerous grave charges were imposed on him following his alleged shootout with NYPD officers and a vehicle accident involving his 2009 Nissan Murano and a NYPD car.

The Manhattan resident is set to answer to many serious felony charges in a court of law. The charges stem from an intense pursuit by law enforcement that ended in a confrontation where three NYPD officers were injured, and the suspect was captured.

Pitt resides in the East 30th Street’s 400 block, and he stood before the Richmond County Criminal Court in St. George to hear the array of charges against him. These includes severe charges like first- and second-degree attempted murder and various other firearm-related offenses according to the court documents.

These particular charges include criminal use of a firearm, criminal possession of a lethal weapon, illegal acquisition of bullets, and reckless endangerment. His reckless actions on that fateful day also led to a charge of unlawful evasion of the police and several traffic offenses.

Law enforcement’s document narrates that on that Sunday, at about 7:30 in the evening, NYPD officers in a discreet vehicle noticed a 2009 Nissan Murano committing a traffic violation. The vehicle, as officials observed, blew past a red light at the crossroads of Forest and Union avenues, driving straight from a lane dedicated for left turns.

Upon realizing the violation, the officers turned their lights and sirens on and started to chase the automobile. Pitt, who was allegedly at the wheel, didn’t stop his vehicle, instead he embarked on an evasive journey through the streets of Staten Island, as per the officers’ account.

Their report illustrates how the Nissan eventually reached Port Richmond Avenue after a complicated path through the city. When he got to the region of 290 Port Richmond Ave., Pitt is accused of firing several bullets from a handgun towards a clearly identified NYPD car, hitting it multiple times.

The complaint states that there were two officers in the NYPD vehicle that became the victim of a sideswipe by the Nissan, which ended up on the sidewalk. It’s worth noting that the officers didn’t retaliate with gunfire, and Pitt was apprehended without further escalation.

The aftermath of the frightening incident left one officer with a shoulder injury, a second one with multiple arm injuries, while a third suffered a knee injury, according to accounts documented in the complaint. These officers were then taken to a nearby hospital in a stable state for further medical evaluation.

Meanwhile, the accused, Pitt, was also transported to a local hospital for an unexpected medical situation, as shared by an NYPD representative. The specifics of his medical situation have not been revealed at this time.

Later, with a legally obtained search warrant, police investigators retrieved a black Taurus PTIIIG2 pistol with nine rounds of .9 caliber bullets in the magazine and one in the firearm’s chamber. This lethal weapon was found on the passenger-side floor of the Nissan, the suspect’s vehicle.

The search did not end there though; a Glock 27.40 caliber firearm was also found situated on the driver’s seat of the vehicle. All these details were included in the official police complaint filed after the incident.

Upon checking Pitt’s records in NYPD database, it was established that he didn’t hold a license activating him to own or handle a gun in New York. Moreover, it was also discovered that in 2017 he was convicted for felony criminal possession of a weapon.

Seven years prior to this latest incident, Pitt had been found guilty of possessing a weapon, leading to a six-year prison sentence, as stated in the complaint. This previous conviction makes the new charges even more serious.

Facing all aforementioned charges, Pitt entered a plea of not guilty during his court appearance on Wednesday and was held in custody without bail. As of this time, no comment was obtained from Pitt’s legal representative.
