Inside Man: Most Wanted Reemerges in Netflix Popularity Charts

One of Denzel Washington’s landmark thriller movies has seen an unexpected revival on Netflix. Inside Man: Most Wanted, a sequel to Inside Man, originally directed by Spike Lee in 2006, made its debut in 2019 after a myriad of postponements. While Washington and Lee did not return, Aml Ameen took on the leading role as Remy Darbonne in the film. He was joined by Rhea Seehorn, Roxanne McKee, Akshay Kumar, and Jessica Sutton. The plot revolves around FBI and NYPD officers collaborating to halt a band of thieves, who are holding hostages in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Whereas the initial Inside Man earned over $180million worldwide, this follow-up didn’t meet the same high standards, scoring a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet, it has managed to resurface in the Netflix landscape in the UK, rallying up the popularity charts. It now features as the second most viewed movie of the week, just behind the real-life drama, A Deadly American Marriage.

Other movies in the top ten include Nonnas, Black Adam, Bad Influence, Havoc and Extraterrestrial, along with cult favorite Mean Girls, Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, and a documentary on Britain during the World War II blitz.

The narrative of Most Wanted unfolds a few years post the original Inside Man. The storyline highlights the adventures of officers Brynn Stewart (played by Rhea) and Remy (played by Aml), who join forces to counter a cunning group of thieves. Their target? A treasury of Nazi gold hidden within a bank.

The movie’s summary states, ‘A gifted NYPD negotiator finds himself at odds with the FBI and squarely up against a clever criminal mastermind who seeks to plunder the Federal Reserve.’ Viewer sentiment towards the film was at best mixed, with Rotten Tomatoes reflecting an average audience rating.

The film drew a range of critique from its spectators. One harsh critic lamented, ‘If you envision a good sequel merely as a pale imitation of the original story with predictable foreshadowing and shoddy acting that breaks the film’s stride, then this is your cup of tea.’ Another disgruntled viewer echoed this viewpoint, ‘A very pointless sequel that attempts to build on its predecessor, but unfortunately seems to insult it.’

‘This is a complete mockery of the original piece,’ bemoaned an indeterminate reviewer. ‘Utterly devoid of creativity and highly foreseeable.’ In sharp contrast, an unnamed admirer commended, ‘This burglary film startlingly turned out to be more enjoyable than expected. It’s an acceptable crime flick for a casual watch.’

Inside Man: Most Wanted can be currently streamed on Netflix.
