The influential Vice President JD Vance has made recent appearances at the Conservative Political Action Conference, CPAC, held at the renowned Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. This event, taking place in February 2025 in Oxon Hill, Md., was characterized by significant political exchanges and discussions of utmost importance, raising questions about the leadership of the Republican Party for the 2028 race to presidency.
President Donald Trump, a figure of immense global stature and influence, has amused the political world with speculations about his wanting a third term as the American leader. Yet, despite the intriguing interest this raises, the Republican Party will have to identify a new frontline candidate to carry the party’s torch in the 2028 presidential elections.
The pool of potential candidates is broad, with a number of competent and reputable figures worthy of consideration. However, according to recent insights from JL Partners, which were published by The Telegraph, JD Vance surfaces as a top choice, entrenched in the favor of Republicans as the sturdy frontrunner for the 2028 GOP presidential primary.
The Telegraph reveals that the JL Partners’ survey indicates significant support for JD Vance within the party. An impressive 46% of polled Republicans are confident in Vance’s capability to step forth as the party’s standard-bearer, making him a firm favorite in the nomination race. The poll notes that 13% of participants were uncertain about their choice, pointing out that the race is far from over.
Other prominent Republicans have also earned some respect in the polls. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and renowned conservative entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy are among the notable figures who have gained strength in the primary race with 8% and 7% of support respectively recorded in the new poll.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, another distinguished figure in the party, garnered 6% of support in the new poll. The recent survey reached out to 975 registered voters, painting an interesting beginning for the 2028 GOP presidential primary race. It is clear that Republican voters are eager to weigh their options and choose the best leader for the future of their party.
Another poll conducted by Economist/YouGov mirrors Vance’s lead. Showing that 44% of Republicans have picked Vance as their top prospect for the 2028 ticket, this poll further consolidates his position. Comparatively, DeSantis secured 12% of preferences, while Rubio claimed the choice of only 3% of the Republicans polled.
Gallup’s surveys present interesting insights into the favorability ratings for the potential candidates. Within this framework, Vance can boast a 42% favorability rating against a 40% unfavorable score. Rubio shows a similarly mixed response with favorable and unfavorable ratings at 41% and 33% respectively.
President Donald Trump, always with a keen eye for talent and leadership, positively mentioned Vance and Rubio as potential successors. Despite his own light-hearted calls about running for a third term, Trump recognizes the skills and potential within his party. Trump’s endorsement – even if implicit – holds immense sway, considering his impactful legacy and enduring popularity within the party.
When approached about who he’d like to see take charge after his reign, Trump gave affirmative inclinations towards both Vance and Rubio, yet shied away from making any firm endorsements. Undoubtedly aware of the complexity and importance of this decision, he referred to both politicians in high regard. According to him, Vance’s commendable performance as Vice President gives him an inherent advantage in the race.
Trump stated in a recent interview, “It’s far too early to say that. But you know, I do have a vice president, and typically – and JD’s doing a fantastic job… I think he’s a fantastic, brilliant guy. Marco is great. There’s a lot of them that are great. I also see tremendous unity…” These words from Trump signal a great appreciation for the potential successors within his administration.
Vance and Rubio, who had initially expressed skepticism about Trump’s approach, revised their stance after witnessing Trump’s effective tenure. Their public appreciation for Trump adds another layer of intrigue to the nomination race.
Speaking to Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Vance expressed this evolution in thought. “I was certainly skeptical of Donald Trump in 2016, but President Trump was a great president and he changed my mind,” Vance stated. His admiration for Trump’s performance in office reflects the sentiment nurtured by the majority of the party and is likely to resonate with the Republican populace.
“I think he changed the minds of a lot of Americans, because again he delivered that peace and prosperity,” continued Vance in his praise of the former president. This highlights the tacit understanding that the leader who seeks to follow Trump’s footsteps will have to uphold the same values of peace, stability, and economic strength.
