On May 13, a distressing altercation took place in a McDonald’s fast food restaurant located in the outskirts of Carpentersville. It involved serious physical harm being inflicted on a 19-year-old woman. Eyewitnesses and law enforcement officials reported that the perpetrators of the incident were a male adult and a teenager. Before the altercation turned violent, it was noted that insulting comments were made by the two male individuals which targeted the woman’s sexual preference. The woman, Kady Grass, became the victim of their hostility and physical assault.
The town of Carpentersville, where the upsetting episode occurred is based at 1660 S. Kennedy Dr. The reports from the officials who arrived at the scene painted a horrific picture. They recorded a heinous act where a young woman was being violently assaulted by two males. This physical harassment and assault had initially roots in verbal aggression, directed at Kady due to her sexual orientation.
Soon after the verbal provocation, the situation spiraled out of control and turned into a physical skirmish. Sadly, the result of this physical assault was grave bodily harm for the victim, Kady. She was left severely injured and bruised due to the continued assault by the two males, one of whom was under legal adult age.
The Carpentersville Police Department, upon reaching the scene, found Kady severely beaten. It was determined after a quick assessment of the situation that her injuries were life-threatening, and immediate medical attention was necessary. Without losing any time, the police arranged for the transportation of the victim to a neighboring medical facility for treatment and emergency care.
Post the violent incident, an investigation was launched, headed by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. Their primary aim was to collect necessary evidence and ensure the guilty parties responsible for the violent incident were held accountable. Following the thorough investigation, they had enough evidence in hand to press multiple serious charges against the unremorseful culprits.
On May 17, John Kammrad, a resident of Elgin, who had turned nineteen only recently, was the first to be detained. The police preferred multiple felony charges against him, comprising aggravated battery, bodily harm, and aggravated battery in a public place, mob action amongst others.
The younger culprit involved in the brutal assault handed himself over to the authorities a day prior, on the 16th of May. Despite his tender age of 16, he was met with similar disdain and legal action due to the severity and the reckless nature of his involvement in the assault.
In the aftermath of the incident, Grass had the courage to come forward and share her horrific experience. She revealed that she was in town for her young cousin’s choir concert, a supposed joyous celebration marred by the unfortunate event. The unexpected attack happened from multiple sides, leaving her little chance to defend herself.
During the interview, Grass shared, ‘One hit me in the jaw and one was hitting me in the front and then I didn’t realize that I was getting hit behind until a little bit later.’ Her horrifying story did not stop there. She added that she was rendered unconscious from the subsequent attacks, unable to remember the details.
The severity of the physical assault reached a point where the attackers continued to stomp on her head, even when she lost consciousness. She has no memory of this portion of the attack but the details were confirmed by her 13-year-old cousin who had been present during the nightmare of an incident.
The occurrence of such a horrific incident within the community further emphasizes the necessity of addressing issues of violence and discrimination. It serves as a grim reminder of the abuses and violence that many in the LGBTQ+ community are vulnerable to. It also highlights how far society still has to go in ensuring an accepting and safe space for all, regardless of their sexual alignment.
Despite the clear indications of the crime being fueled by hatred towards the victim’s sexual orientation, the office decided not to file hate crime charges after a thorough review of the entire case. This decision can generate differing responses, underlining the complexities and gray areas that surround hate crimes and their legal implications.
This dreadful incident remains a stark reminder of the imperative need for a stronger stand against not just physical violence, but also discrimination, inequality, and hatred. While Kady Grass battles with her physical injuries and emotional trauma, the fight against homophobia continues in Carpentersville and beyond.
