In a bold move, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has halted trading negotiations and initiated sanctions against Israel, in response to their escalation of military activities in Gaza. Subsequently, he requested the presence of the Israeli ambassador. This signifies the most severe reproach of Israel by the Government since the inception of conflicts post-October 7.
During a discourse in the Commons, Sir Keir vividly recounted the ‘extent of hardship’ being endured by the Gaza inhabitants, which he deemed as ‘unbearable’. In his words, ‘The intensified aggression from Israel leading to appalling conditions with innocent children repeatedly under assault is absolutely unbearable’.
David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, didn’t hold back his criticism of Israeli extreme right-wing politicians for their ‘persistently egregious conduct and inflammatory speech’. Sir Lammy announced the imposition of sanctions on several individuals and organizations involved in the settling of the West Bank.
In his announcement Lammy stated, ‘As a dedicated friend of Israel and an individual profoundly devoted to the principles enshrined in its Declaration of Independence, I find this situation deeply distressing’. His impassioned statement underscored the discontent harbored by top-level British officials towards the ongoing situation.
A noticeably outraged David Lammy lashed out at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s design to seize control of the Gaza strip while allowing only a restricted amount of aid to reach its beleaguered inhabitants. He conveyed to his fellow MPs, ‘We have to categorize this accurately. It is radicalism. It is horrific. I wholeheartedly deplore it’.
In reaction to the sanctions, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs lambasted the ministers, painting their stance as a result of an ‘anti-Israel obsession’, spawned by a need to cater to their own ‘domestic political considerations’. An official statement in response is yet to be issued by Israel regarding the sanctions and the comments made by British officials.
Israel’s military establishment has reported the commencement of extensive ground operations at the northern and southern borders of Gaza. Official spokesperson Oren Marmorstein firmly declared, ‘No amount of international pressure will alter Israel’s determined course’. The recent developments have indeed raised international concerns and questions about the future stability of the region.
