As the nation headed into Memorial Day weekend, the White House celebrated a major legislative victory: the passage of President Donald Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised the bill as a historic milestone and a testament to Trump’s unmatched ability to unify the Republican Party and deliver results.
The bill passed in the House of Representatives by a razor-thin margin of 215–214 following a marathon session that stretched through the night. The victory is widely seen as a personal triumph for Trump, who faced relentless skepticism from the media and establishment pundits who predicted the measure would never make it to the floor, let alone pass.
“This proves President Trump is the unequivocal leader of the Republican Party,” Leavitt said. “He proved the liberal media and political class wrong once again by bringing together all wings of the GOP to pass this bill ahead of schedule.”
Leavitt went further, calling Trump “the greatest closer in the history of presidential politics” during Thursday’s press briefing. She emphasized that while the bill involved extensive negotiations, it was the president’s leadership that sealed the deal. “There’s never been a more powerful and persuasive President than Donald Trump,” she said.
The “Big, Beautiful Bill” delivers on key pillars of Trump’s “America First” agenda:
The largest tax cut in U.S. history, including eliminating taxes on tips and overtime income.
Massive investments in border security, including record funding for the wall and pay raises for Border Patrol and ICE agents.
The largest deficit reduction package in nearly three decades.
Tax incentives for purchasing American-made vehicles and goods.
Trump took a victory lap on Truth Social, applauding House Speaker Mike Johnson and the Republican caucus for standing strong. “Great job by Speaker Mike Johnson, and the House Leadership, and thank you to every Republican who voted YES on this Historic Bill,” Trump wrote. “Now, it’s time for our friends in the Senate to get to work and send this bill to my desk as soon as possible. There is no time to waste.”
He also drew a sharp contrast between his leadership and the Democrats, blasting them for failing to offer serious solutions. “They have forgotten their landslide loss in the Presidential Election,” Trump wrote. “They’re clinging to policies that the American people have rejected—open borders, gender extremism, and globalist priorities that have no place in our country’s future.”
Senate Republicans have signaled support for the bill in principle but warned that it may need adjustments to secure passage. Senate Majority Leader John Thune noted, “They’ve got to do what they can get 218 for, and we’ve got to do what we can get 51 for.”
Despite possible Senate revisions, House Republicans are urging lawmakers not to water down the bill’s core provisions, warning it could jeopardize the bill’s future in the House.
For now, Trump and his team are riding high on a victory that even critics are calling one of the most significant legislative achievements in modern history—both for its scope and for what it says about Trump’s control over the Republican agenda heading into the future.
