The last week saw Los Angeles consumed by a wave of remarkable protests ignited by immigration clampdowns carried out by federal immigration officials around the locality. A U.S. federal court judge delivered an injunction on Thursday that barred President Trump from deploying the California National Guard within Los Angeles. The court order necessitated a return to civilian command of these forces, under the guidance of Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Despite the prohibitive order, an appeals court has paused its implementation for now, deciding to review the case in its entirety. Over the past two evenings, Los Angeles has been under a mandated curfew, as declared by Mayor Karen Bass. The mayor expressed her expectation for the protests to respect legal boundaries, also acknowledging that the peaceful intent had been shadowed by a few incidents.
Meanwhile, most areas of Los Angeles beyond the city center have observed the usual pace of life, seemingly unaffected by the downtown turmoil. The impassioned crowds of protesters made their way from Pershing Square to the periphery of City Hall before law enforcement dispersed them.
An undercurrent of protest and activism continued to simmer, however, highlighted by voices like Aquilina Soriano-Versoza. As the executive director of the Pilipino Worker’s Center Southern California, Soriano-Versoza made a public stand at Culver City, right outside a carwash that had been subject to an immigration raid.
The downtown area of Los Angeles has witnessed a curfew enforced from 8 p.m. till 6 a.m., embodying an eerily quiet and controlled stronghold. The situation, defined by its unrest, complies with the curfew, created by a sense of increasing angst and unease.
On the issue of the increasing turmoil, Governor Gavin Newsom expressed concern and disappointment. The Governor believed the tensions were fueled by President Trump’s unexpected decision to position troops within the state without his consent. This move sparked outrage and ignited the ongoing unrest, further complicating the socio-political landscape.
