The day was seemingly ordinary for Casey Ramirez. His primary concern was a couple of banners which were attached to two aircraft flying over Key Biscayne’s beach. The first banner was created as a token of affection for Pamela Jackson, his girlfriend, whom he lovingly named P.J. The second banner, however, was a humorous and sharp message for his colleagues, pilots Kent Moeckly and Greg Schmidt.
In Casey’s perspective, it was an entertaining gag, intended to bring humor and lightheartedness. Little did he know that this pivotal day would lead to harsher consequences. The very next day, overcome by anger, Jackson decided to travel back to California, distancing herself from Ramirez. This resulted in their separation, turning Ramirez’s life upside down.
The upcoming year was not merciful to Ramirez either. He, along with his comrade Moeckly, was found guilty of severe cocaine charges in federal courts. Schmidt, on the other hand, decided to turn against his friends and played a critical role in the prosecution as their leading witness.
The day started early for all of them; it was Ramirez’s insistence that woke them at sunrise. After a quick breakfast at the Silver Sands Motel, they hurried to the beach, located along the Atlantic coastline. It was a spectacle he had envisioned, and he wanted them all present, even though it was early enough that the beach was scarcely crowded.
It was, however, a breezy day, with wind speeds reaching until around 30 mph. A few determined individuals were seen perfecting their wind surfing skills in the sand. All of a sudden, they hear a distant humming sound, the first aircraft was approaching, its banner fluttering along.
There was a glitch in Casey’s plan. Rather than the anticipated love note appearing first, the airplane displayed the prank banner aimed at his friends – Kent and Greg, sit on it and rotate. This unforeseen order of events caught everyone by surprise. Shortly after, the second banner flew by, expressing Ramirez’s love for P.J., adding both humor and confusion to the morning’s proceedings.
Ramirez, making the best of the situation, traced a heart in the sand, symbolizing his love for P.J. A quick photography session followed – Greg capturing a picture of Ramirez and Jackson embracing in front of the sketched heart, and the symbolic plane soaring overhead with the banner ‘P.J., I love you. Casey.’
As the planes made their rounds returning back, the foursome looked upwards, squinting against the stark brightness of the morning sun. An elaborate prank mingled with a show of affection perfectly echoed Ramirez’s nature of combining grand gestures with humor, which was quite prominent that morning.
Despite their lighthearted façade, anxiety was brewing deep within the group. They were worried about their friend ‘Uncle Bill’ Coulombe, who was probably soaring above, returning from an undisclosed trip towards the south.
It was an evening outside modest townhouses based in the suburb of Pembroke Pines in Miami. Three men found themselves near the townhouses’ mailboxes. It was Thursday, the 21st of April 1983. Among the men, one distinctly Hispanic looking individual with a playful haircut, Casey Ramirez, was leading the trio.
Ramirez was engaged in a deep conversation with two tall white men, discussing a so-called ‘mission.’ Schmidt later testified in court that this mysterious mission was the primary subject of their discussion. This critical exchange was taking place outside the townhouse because Ramirez was convinced that they were under federal surveillance.
Paranoia had taken over Casey. He believed that federal agents had bugged his townhouse, a reason why he refrained from holding talks within the townhouse or over the phone. Schmidt, recounting the memory, remarked on Ramirez’s paranoia, the driving force of their outdoor rendezvous.
Turns out, Ramirez’s fears were not unfounded. The federal investigation team was indeed keeping a watchful eye on him. For a while, they had been tracking activities around the townhouse. Thus, his careful caution was justified.
