Impartial Journalism Aspired Amidst Protests and Immigration Debates

Large-scale media organizations often maintain a predictable narration when reporting on leftist disturbances. Cities governed predominantly by progressives are frequently marred by these uproars. Television newscasters typically remind their audience that the turmoil, despite its tumultuous climax, commenced in a nonviolent manner. Indeed, a pattern is apparent in these demonstrations that subsequently spiral into violence.

The protests commence without much of an uproar during the day but gradually build up force, and by night, transform some districts into warzones replete with chaos and destruction. Behind the masks that hide their identities, these dissenters employ rocks, flames, and coercion to orchestrate a nightmare in cityscapes. Los Angeles and California were the recent stages for such displays of rioting.

One is inclined to wonder about the reaction of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom concerning the upheaval in their jurisdictions. Their evasive response to the erupting anarchy could easily be mistaken as indifference. They both seem to reserve their strongest criticisms not for the rambunctious rioters but for President Donald Trump.

Bass and Newsom hold Trump responsible for the unprompted pandemonium that occurs regularly when the leftist community offers opposition to the measures enacted by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Newsom insists that trouble began brewing only after Trump stepped in. According to Bass, in her interview with CNN, if there hadn’t been immigration raids, the bedlam that ensued wouldn’t have occurred.

Dissent, from Bass’s perspective, equates to defiance against law enforcement. Activists throwing a barrage of bottles and rocks targeting ICE vehicles and National Guard personnel, setting autonomous vehicles and American flags ablaze, and closing off vital traffic arteries to the common taxpayer, strangely does not seem to constitute ‘disorder’ in their view.

According to Sean Walsh, former deputy chief of staff to the previous California Governor Pete Wilson, those brandishing Mexican flags amidst the uproar are doing more harm than good to the anti-ICE protestors’ cause. Recalling the backlash against Proposition 187, a proposal to restrict health, welfare, and educational aid to illegal immigrants in 1994, Walsh believes these flag-bearing protestors are undermining their plea for inclusivity.

Every time I see a foreign flag being waved at a protest, my conclusion is that the demonstration isn’t necessarily about inclusivity. It becomes evident that there is a strong sense of solidarity with other nations at play, regardless of how it might damage their argument. It appears that the Democrats in California think that immigration laws must be disregarded, as there have been successful past instances of the same.

This belief seems to stem from the fact that many immigrants have managed to dodge federal immigration laws over the years, which they think bestows on them the right to continuity. In a peculiar twist, Golden State Democrats seem to think they gain the upper hand by fiercely defending immigrants who have broken American laws.

A recent Los Angeles Times article highlighted the irrational framing of some news stories. Its title read ‘Torrance boy, 9, detained by ICE for planned deportation to Honduras, Community is outraged’, which presents a case of the public’s objection to ICE performing its duty.

The narrative states that Martir Garcia-Benegas and his son entered the U.S. on July 10, 2021. Subsequently, they were ordered deportation by a judge on Sept. 1, 2022. After Garcia-Benegas appealed against this decision, his appeal was dismissed in August 2023. However, despite the judge’s orders, the father and son failed to leave the country, prompting ICE to take action.

According to an ICE representative, Garcia-Benegas and his son were taken into custody in May, with an intent to deport them to Honduras. The government enforcing federal immigration law is considered hot news by media outlets, but somehow, when ICE nabbed serious criminals, no such wave of public indignation or media uproar was observed.

News outlets seem to skim over stories where ICE apprehends murderers, sex offenders, and other violent criminals. These incidents barely make the headlines. Yet when it involves deportations, particularly involving individuals with a sympathetic standing, like children, it is amplified and branded as ‘outrageous’.

It’s striking to observe that when ICE performs its duty – enforcing immigration law, the act is oftentimes depicted as an outrageous governmental offense. Meanwhile, capture and deportation of gravely dangerous criminals fail to stir similar responses, often drowned in the sea of many other news.

These selective responses and portrayals by media house expose a significant bias in how individuals perceive federal immigration law enforcement. This skewed representation might be part of the reason why President Trump got an upper hand on the issue, and perhaps also a crucial factor in his victorious run in November.

Concluding, it’s essential to reflect upon the narrative that is etched in the minds of the public through such biased and selective coverage. The disproportionate attention & uproar during instances of deportations compared to instances of apprehending dangerous criminals calls for unbiased and balanced coverage.
