Rather shamefully, Mr. O’Connell immediately denied these accusations, failing to take responsibility for decisions made under his leadership.
In a further apparent bid to deflect criticism, he demanded that city departments keep him informed of any interactions with immigration officers. Furthermore, O’Connell signaled support for a fund soliciting private donations for the benefit of immigrant families. However, his seemingly benevolent actions raised the ire of Tennessee Republicans, who are calling for an investigation into possible violations of state law by the mayor.
Tennessee is a state that has staunchly outlawed ‘sanctuary city’ policies. The notion of these policies is to limit cooperation with immigration enforcement, providing a sense of false security to undocumented immigrants about their legal status. Republicans pointed their finger towards O’Connell for another questionable incident. During his campaign for mayor, O’Connell touted his opposition to the construction of a new NFL stadium, claiming that he’d prioritize residents over tourists. He managed to mend fences with a local bar mogul who had previously objected to him. Yet, these attempts at public relations do not necessarily equate to effective governance.
One prominent Tennessee politician offered an ambiguous comment: ‘We can disagree on things and still be able to work together.’ Yet the question remains: How much cooperation is there between a mayor who bends the law and state representatives who stick to it? The lack of definitive boundaries presents a major challenge in governance.
O’Connell’s mishandling of the recent immigration conflicts earned him the moniker of a ‘rogue mayor’ from a national congressman. Clearly, such labels do not bode well for the reputation of a city official.
Despite the criticism, O’Connell maintains a restrained response, preferring to stay focused on remaking Nashville in his opaque political image. He optimistically stated, ‘I would hope that at the end of all of this, our overall success is based on the outcomes of the work we did.’ The effectiveness of this rhetoric, however, remains to be seen in tangible improvements.
