On Monday, Gilian Thomas expressed the distress of her family following an incident involving her 78-year-old Aunt, Janet Bowen. The unfortunate occurrence took place on a Southwest Miami-Dade street and left Bowen with severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle and abandoned on the roadway. ‘It’s devastating to see that an elder woman could be hit and left on the street as though she were insignificant,’ expressed a deeply saddened Thomas.
The grave incident transpired in the vicinity of Southwest 147th Avenue and 174th Street, as reported by Thomas. Regrettably, bystanders chose to dial 911 instead of rendering immediate assistance to the stricken elderly woman. ‘She was returning home from the grocery store; it was early in the morning when a vehicle ran into her,’ detailed Thomas.
She proceeded to explain the unsettling events following the collision. ‘From what we gathered, when the police and paramedics arrived, she was there alone on the street. Her belongings, including her hat, glasses, and shoes, were scattered around her, yet no one could provide details about the incident,’ Thomas narrated with a tremor in her voice that belied her outrage and helplessness.
Bowen has since been admitted to Jackson South Medical Center and the family shared distressing images of her condition. Her injuries were reported to be comprehensive and severe. ‘The collision resulted in multiple fractures in her thigh bone, arm, pelvis, as well as a cranial hemorrhage,’ shared Thomas, emphasizing the extent of Bowen’s physical distress.
Following these injuries, Bowen underwent a surgical procedure and her family continues to keep vigil by her bedside, monitoring her recuperation. They relayed that Bowen regained consciousness post-surgery and is expected to be in a position to provide her account to law enforcement authorities. Her kin now seeks to uncover the identity of the person responsible for this tragic event.
Bowen has long been a devout member of her church community since her youth, described as an exceptionally kind woman by her niece. Thomas questioned the humanity of the individuals witnessing the accident, ‘You often observe people stopping for animals, but wouldn’t halt for a human being in distress?’ The shock and disbelief were evident in her tear-filled eyes.
