2024 Election Analysis: ‘Strange’ Republicans Triumph over ‘Unhinged’ Democrats

In the summer of 2024, Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz enthusiastically endorsed then-presidential contender Kamala Harris, presenting a scathing critique of the Republicans: they are ‘strange’. Mysteriously, this ‘strangeness’ went on to triumph in the November elections, securing victory for Donald Trump with unprecedented support from traditionally Democratic demographics. This rightward shift from 2020 to 2024 was not necessarily driven by a sudden aptitude of Republicans to win over moderate or swing voters. Rather, it could be encapsulated with a straightforward statement: Republicans might be ‘strange’, but Democrats come across as unhinged.

The Democratic party’s move towards adopting some seemingly extreme stands on key issues in recent years has led to a significant loss in their political footing, especially amongst folks who would otherwise be averse to voting for Republicans. Let’s consider the case of gender identity, a topic that I frequently discuss. The general consensus amongst voters is that allowing males to compete in women’s sports teams, and encouraging children to transition to the opposite gender, are policies that lean firmly into the realm of absurdity. Aligning with this stance did not serve the Democrats well in the 2024 election.

Further evidence from the 2024 election showed that the majority of voters consider the idea of unrestricted illegal immigration to be somewhat ridiculous. The issue of border security and illicit immigration topped the list of concerns for many voters. However, California’s political leaders seemed to disregard these sentiments, choosing instead to double down on a path that seemed detached from reality to many across the nation.

Public sentiment came to a head in the vicinity of Los Angeles when local residents started to aggressively contest agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement during multiple immigration raids. The situation quickly escalated. On June 6, a faction of the protestors made a bold attempt to infiltrate the Roybal Federal building in downtown LA. Simultaneously, others began obstructing ICE vehicles carrying detainees, using hastily-constructed barriers to prevent their departure from the already vandalized building, as per footage relayed by local media.

On June 7, in a highly unusual turn of events, President Donald Trump mobilized troops from the California National Guard. Typically, this responsibility lies with the state governor, but federal law permits the President to step in if the governor is either unable or refuses to enact such measures, especially if the law cannot be upheld due to the unrest. California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, seemed unprepared for the crisis, with no apparent plans to call on the National Guard himself.

The situation got worse on June 8, when furious protestors set alight several self-driving electric taxis owned by Waymo. Consequently, the company was compelled to suspend its services. Denying the gravity of the situation, the city authorities continued to maintain that the protests were confined to ‘a few downtown streets’. The obtuseness displayed by Democratic leaders towards their constituents’ concerns seemed notably absurd.

Democrats seem to be inadvertently harming those they intend to support. The majority of individuals embroiled in this immigration debacle are innocent people seeking refuge from adversity in their native lands. Regrettably, as long as the threats they potentially represent continue to be overlooked, these refugees are prone to be distrusted and scorned just like the drug traffickers and gang members who have been smuggled along with them into the country.

Insightful individuals who can distinguish between drug traffickers and genuine refugees are aware that mass deportations would have severe implications. Not all right-leaning conservatives believe in large-scale deportations — this includes me. But the Democratic Party’s willful neglect of the pressing issues at hand is incomprehensible. If they fail to reassess their stance, voters may once again lend their support to the somewhat ‘strange’ Republicans.

In the 2024 election, the voters voiced their preference for the Republican party’s ‘strangeness’, as opposed to the Democrats’ perceived ‘madness’. The perception of the Democratic Party leaning towards the extreme and the ‘strangeness’ of the Republican counterparts culminated in unexpected support for the latter, signalling a detour from traditional voter loyalties.
