In the previous day, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stationed to the north of Jerusalem successfully neutralized a terrorist group that aimed to carry out planned attacks and discovered a bomb-making facility in the region of Ramallah. The individuals involved in this nefarious cell were promptly detained. Alongside this, IDF units embarked on compliance actions to dismantle an illegally established compound and several building sites in Silwad, a village nestled to the north-east of Ramallah.
President Donald Trump has scheduled a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, at the White House on the following Monday. This rendezvous comes amidst Trump’s intensifying diplomatic efforts to push both the Israeli government and Hamas towards a ceasefire and a hostage agreement, seeking a peaceful resolution to the war in Gaza.
Trump, by shifting his focus towards the conflicts between Israel and Hamas, is signaling a drive to establish peace, following the ceasefire that concluded the twelve days’ of warfare between Israel and Iran approximately a week prior.
Ministers of foreign affairs from the G7 nations advocated for the reintroduction of discussions to solidify a far-reaching, verifiable, and long-lasting agreement that addresses Iran’s nuclear intentions. Their joint communication highlighted the importance of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as the central guideline for preventing the spread of nuclear weapons worldwide.
They stressed on the fact that it was critical for Iran to not just remain a participating nation in the NPT, but also adheres to and realizes all its obligations under the Treaty.
On the contrary, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the possibility of immediate resumption of diplomatic discussions with the United States. Araghchi insisted on receiving guarantees from the US to prevent any future military assaults. His quote was, ‘For deciding on restarting engagement with the US, we need to ensure that America will abstain from targeting us during any military attack while negotiations are ongoing.’
Araghchi added, ‘keeping these points into consideration, a bit more time is required,’ indicating the diplomatic negotiations were far from closed. He confirmed that ‘the doors of diplomacy will never be entirely shut.’
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty had several telephone interactions with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, and the chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, discussing the resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue. Abdelatty asserted the necessity to maintain regional peace and stability by means of diplomatic negotiations and peaceful agreements.
Meanwhile, President Trump firmly reiterated his uncompromising position, via a writing piece that read, ‘I am offering Iran NOTHING, unlike Obama,’ he continued, ‘Nuclear discussions have ceased as we have COMPLETELY DESTROYED their nuclear infrastructures.’
An escalation in tensions followed this statement as it coincided with Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites. This action was soon succeeded by U.S. strikes on Iran’s Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear facilities on the 21st of June.
Recently, Israel has expressed concern over Iran’s potential to develop a nuclear weapon imminently. Yet, Tehran refuted these allegations, insisting their nuclear activity is aimed for peaceful applications.
Back in 2015, under the nuclear deal, Iran was allowed to enrich uranium up to 3.67 percent — deemed appropriate for civilian energy purposes. However, in 2018 after the U.S. withdrew from the agreement, Iran increased enrichment to 60 percent. Even though this is not weapons-grade, it is a sufficiently high level that if refined further, Iran has the potential to produce material capable of creating over nine nuclear weapons.
