Mayor Adams marked an important milestone as the sprawling migrants’ shelter at the Roosevelt Hotel finally ceased operations. This facility, originally a hotel, went dormant in 2020 due to the pandemic, then transitioned into a primary reception center for immigrants in May 2023 as the immigrant crisis intensified.
The trend of reduced border crossings coupled with a surge in deportations resulted in a significant slowdown in the influx of immigrants to the city. The migratory panorama has changed recently, marking the dawn of a new phase.
Adams, upon reflecting upon this chapter of the city’s history, commented, ‘This period, this shelter, they occupy significant pages in our tale.’ He continued, emphasizing the magnitude of the operation, ‘Our city embraced 237,000 migrants and asylum seekers, and the Roosevelt Hotel stood as an emblem of this effort.’
Throughout recent history, this facility became a regular topic in the diatribes of the Trump administration. It was frequently, and inaccurately, portrayed as a crime haven and the operational hub of the notorious Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua.
Throughout all this, the Adams administration stoutly rebutted these false allegations, emphatically countering in legal contexts that the Roosevelt Hotel was not a cesspool of crime, but rather a sanctuary for those seeking a refuge.
Praising the city and its contributions in managing the migrant crisis, the head of the city’s Office of Asylum Seeker Operations expressed, ‘Our actions towards supporting thousands of families have been nothing short of extraordinary, and we take immense pride in our role.’
These sentiments were echoed by another city functionary, previously affiliated with the Adams administration. This official had stepped down due to differences of opinion particularly concerning Adams’ position on immigration policy aligning closely with that of Trump’s.
Sharing her reflections at the press conference, she expressed, ‘The job we did was executed to the best of our abilities, with the utmost dedication and care. I couldn’t be prouder of the stand we took and the work we achieved here.’
