Over the past weeks, it has come to light that several non-offending immigrants find themselves housed at Alligator Alcatraz. This detention center is renowned for its daunting reputation, typically accommodating individuals classified as ‘savage’ and ‘mentally unstable’ by authorities who are in line for deportation. Among those detained and accused of varied crimes, over 250 have been detected who possess a clean slate in terms of criminal activity within the United States, and have merely committed immigration violations.
The aforementioned statistics are derived from a data set that covers more than 700 individuals. These individuals are either being temporarily contained under makeshift tents and within chain-link enclosures at the rapidly instated detention center in the Everglades in Florida or appear to be due for a similar fate. Surprisingly enough, a third of the total counts of detainees have past criminal records with accusations ranging from attempted homicide to illegal re-entry and, quite often, mere traffic contraventions.
Apart from individuals with criminal histories, several hundreds have charges pending against them. The details of these alleged crimes, however, remain undisclosed. An inference can fairly be drawn from this data that a large population of immigrants who lack any criminal history are caught in the crosshairs of an extensive operation set in motion by local and national legal authorities with an aim to locate and deport individuals residing unlawfully in Florida.
As of late June, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had almost half of their detainees under custody solely due to migration violations, without any criminal offence registered against them. Poll results indicate that while most American citizens endorse the deportation of criminals, there is significantly lesser support for the arrest and subsequent detention of undocumented immigrants who otherwise abide by the rules.
Congress representatives from South Florida have advocated for a more humane approach. They urge the administration to exhibit more empathy in their endeavors to locate and expel individuals grappling with immigration issues. It’s important to note, just because an individual does not have a formal U.S. criminal charge does not imply they have a virtuous history. There could be relevant considerations outside of the U.S. jurisdiction.
The compilation of gathered data provides a hint of the center’s demographic breakdown. The detention facility, consisting of an assortment of mobile homes and tents and erected on an airstrip by the side of U.S. Highway 41, has only been functional slightly over a week. Yet, it is already close to its full capacity, accommodating roughly 750 immigrants presently.
Data reveals that the detainees housed here at Alligator Alcatraz hail from around 40 distinct countries across the globe. A significant majority of the individuals are immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, and Cuba, contributing to almost half of the total count. The ages of the detainees span from 18 years to 73 years, and intriguingly, one detainee is listed as a U.S. native.
During their visit to the facility this past Saturday, legislators reported seeing detainees sporting wristbands. These color-coded bands, an initiative by state officials, are meant to indicate the seriousness of each individual’s civil or criminal violations. The color scheme ranged from yellow to red, with yellow being used to denote minor infractions and red meant for indicating severe offenses.
One of the key goals behind the commencement of the facility is to free up space to provide accommodation to illegal immigrants who otherwise would have faced release due to a shortage of beds. However, apart from some detainees having serious criminal charges, there are several who face minor charges like traffic rule violations and some are even asylum seekers.
Among the detainees is a 37-year-old Brazilian, who possesses a valid five-year work permit and owns a solar panel business situated in the Orlando region. In an unfortunate incident, he was arrested on charges of driving under the influence. While appearing for a probation hearing, he was detained by the local law enforcement office of Orange County and subsequently transferred to Alligator Alcatraz.
