California Governor Gavin Newsom refused to give a clear answer this week when asked whether children as young as eight years old are too young to undergo irreversible gender transition procedures.
Appearing on The Shawn Ryan Show, Newsom was confronted with a direct question: “What about for your values, is eight years old too young?”
Rather than offering a definitive yes or no, the Democrat governor danced around the issue, referencing his own 9-year-old child and admitting that he’s still trying to understand the transgender issue.
“This is a tough, tough issue,” Newsom said. “The trans issue for me is also novel — it’s over the last few years, I’m trying to understand as much as anyone else.”
Newsom acknowledged he had initially dismissed concerns about transgender procedures for minors because they were raised by conservatives.
“A lot of the pushback came from folks, candidly, that I didn’t respect,” he admitted. “They were people who were opposed to just basic rights… so my next inclination was to dismiss.”

Though Newsom now claims to be more “open-minded,” he still declined to draw any lines on age — even for irreversible medical procedures on children. He pointed to transgender participation in sports as what finally made him take the issue more seriously, but again avoided answering whether it’s acceptable to allow children to permanently alter their bodies at eight years old.
Critics say Newsom’s dodging is no surprise, given his record. As governor, he signed a law making California the first “sanctuary state” for transgender-identifying minors seeking medical transition procedures — even from out of state. His administration has also backed policies that allow school officials to hide children’s gender transitions from parents.
The moment adds to growing speculation about Newsom’s 2028 presidential ambitions, but also raises serious questions about how far he’s willing to go to appease the radical gender ideology movement — even if it means ignoring biological reality and undermining parental rights.
