It has been reported that Germany, France, and the United Kingdom are preparing to engage in renewed discussions with Iran regarding its nuclear development in the days to come, according to an anonymous German diplomatic official who spoke to AFP.
The source stated, ‘E3 nations are liaising with Iran to set a date in the upcoming week for continued dialogue.’ This statement was released in the wake of alerts from these European powerhouses indicating that they could re-impose global sanctions on Iran if it does not recommence negotiations.
While the decision to resume talks has been settled, the details concerning the consultation’s schedule and location are yet to be ironed out. The semi-official Iranian news medium, Tasnim, has declared that the choice of venue for potential discussions taking place next week is yet to be decided, citing an individual who is privy to the matter.
This news of prospective meetings with Iran springs up in the aftermath of telephonic discussions between the foreign ministers of the E3 nations and the head of foreign affairs for the European Union, coupled with the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi. It is important to note that this is their inaugural substantial interplay after recent attacks on Iran’s nuclear establishments by Israel and the United States.
It’s worth mentioning that the E3 nations, along with Russia and China, are the last standing participants of the 2015 nuclear agreement made with Iran. The USA backed out of this agreement in 2018 which initially removed sanctions imposed on Iran upon the condition of restrictions on their nuclear pursuits.
In the absence of substantial progress or resumption of the ongoing nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran preceding the Israeli-Iranian aerial conflict, the E3 countries have indicated willingness to reintroduce United Nations sanctions on Tehran using the ‘snapback mechanism’ by the end of August.
Araqchi made a remark earlier this week, stating ‘EU/E3 countries desiring influence should behave accountably and reconsider obsolete intimidation and pressure tactics, including the ‘snap-back’ for which they lack moral and legal justification.’
Before the expiry of the United Nations Security Council resolution cementing the agreement on October 18, the ‘snapback mechanism’ has the ability to reinstate UN sanctions. Prior to the Israeli-Iranian conflict, Iran and the U.S. engaged in five series of nuclear discussions brokered by Oman.
These talks faced significant obstacles such as the issue of uranium enrichment in Iran. The Western powers sought a complete reduction to this activity to curtail any prospect of weapon creation. Nonetheless, Iran’s adamant that their nuclear activity is intended only for non-military usages.
