Comedic figure Ellen DeGeneres revealed that her relocation from the U.S. was spurred by the potential re-election of President Donald Trump, and she also touched upon the accusations of a hostile environment at her erstwhile show. Ellen, along with her spouse, actress Portia de Rossi, made their move to the UK prior to last November’s U.S. election, initially purchasing a property they imagined to be a ‘part-time residence’. She recalled, ‘Our journey here was timed just before the election, and we discovered the upsetting results through poignant text messages from our friends. Based on that, it felt like, ‘He’s been elected’, and our instinct was, ‘We are settling here.’
This disclosure follows a week after Ellen publicly expressed her solidarity with fellow presenter Rosie O’Donnell, whose standing as a U.S. citizen has been challenged. Regarding her life in the UK, DeGeneres was all praises and said, ‘In every aspect, life here seems superior.’ Particularly expressive about the allure of the English countryside, Ellen admitted, ‘It’s truly captivating. We’re unfamiliar with such captivating sights. The quaint towns, beautifully preserved architecture, and enchanting villages offer a simpler lifestyle.’
‘Beyond its aesthetic appeal, it’s impeccably clean. From animal welfare to the courtesy of people, everything just surpasses the U.S. I’m absolutely in love with this place,’ she emphasized. ‘We relocated here last November, which might not have been an ideal season, but it gave me my first experience of snowfall. It just reaffirms our affection for this place. We even transported Portia’s horses here, we raise chickens, and we even had sheep for a brief period.’ she shared, revealing more about their life.
Addressing the topic of her sexuality, Ellen shared the pair would consider renewing their wedding vows in the UK, should the U.S. reconsider its stance on the legality of same-sex marriage. She brought up the ongoing issues faced by the LGBTQ+ community in the entertainment industry, she stated ‘It’s regrettable, but being openly gay in Hollywood still invites problems. The fear remains.’
Explaining her concern over the recent proposals by the Southern Baptists in the U.S. to ban gay marriages, DeGeneres further stated, ‘The U.S’s Baptist Church is rallying to prohibit gay marriage. Their motive is to prevent any future occurrences and possibly undo the existing legal standing. Both Portia and I are keenly following the developments and if they succeed, we have planned to tie the knot here again.’
Ellen, the celebrated prime-time talk show celebrity, culminated her iconic ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ amid assertions of a harmful work environment. She provided insight into the bitter finale of her show and shared, ‘Whatever others write about me, the label ‘she’s mean’ gets tagged along. I often grapple with the dilemma of how to respond to this without sounding like I’m seeking sympathy or complaining. Nevertheless, I felt the need to address these claims.’
Expressing her personal traits, she noted, ‘If we strip it down to basics, I’m a straightforward individual who is utterly frank, and maybe that’s misinterpreted as me being mean?’ The memories of her show and the criticisms she faced seem to affect Ellen deeply as she added, ‘It’s painful to know that no matter what I express, I can’t seem to dispel this ‘mean’ reputation.’
‘It troubles me greatly. It’s disturbing to know that people perceive me this way, because, in my heart, I know I am compassionate and empathetic. Yet, the world seems to view me through a different lens,’ she concluded.
