GIVE Initiative Provides $850K to Combat Gun Violence in NY State

Law enforcement units in Chemung and Tompkins County are beneficiaries of nearly $850k, a financial injection from GIVE, a New York State scheme aimed at eradicating firearm-related violence. The Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative is purposed to bolster local laws and regulations intended to suppress crime and violence across the state of New York.

Several local authorities, including the Sheriff’s Office in Chemung and Tompkins County, Elmira Police Department, Ithaca Police Department amongst others will jointly receive a grant of $843,417 from the state. This funding is targeted at strengthening capabilities at the local level to effectively combat gun violence and associated crimes.

A detailed analysis of the funding has been provided according to figures from New York State. The District Attorney’s Office in Chemung County will be allocated $54,500. In addition to this, Chemung County’s probation department stands to benefit from a grant of $44,000 and the County Sheriff’s Office will receive $90,000.

Sharing further in the funding, Elmira Police Department will receive a substantial allocation of $232,962. The authorities in Tompkins County are slated to receive a combined sum totaling $421,955. This funding intends to further enhance the capabilities and capacities of local authorities in these areas.

The Ithaca Police Department will be granted $150,485 while the Tompkins County probation department is due to receive $50,820. Furthermore, the Sheriff’s Office in Tompkins County is set to benefit from a sizable portion of the grant, amounting to $220,650. These funds are aimed at enabling these agencies to take a more proactive approach towards tackling gun-related violence within these communities.

These agencies ranging from the District Attorney’s offices to the Sheriff’s departments are expected to utilize their respective shares on various expenses, including officer training, covering overtime, offsetting personnel costs, and towards other relevant expenses. This capital funding enables law enforcement to boost their operations and ensure they are adequately equipped to effectively address gun-related crimes.

Data from the governor’s office reveals that within the jurisdictions that have received the GIVE funding, shooting incidents have shown a significant drop, decreasing by 52% in 2024. This positive development indicates a direct and effective correlation between the financial support provided and a decrease in gun violence, affirming that the initiative is yielding the desired results.

Public safety remains the topmost priority, and since the commencement of my term in office, my administration and I have remained steadfastly focused on working in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies. Our collective target entails launching a comprehensive assault on gun violence plaguing communities across New York.

The state of New York recognizes the GIVE initiative as a pivotal aspect of our all-encompassing strategy to minimize shooting incidents and the occurrence of gun-related violent crimes. We are witness to the significant progress being made courtesy of this initiative, however, we remain resilient and refuse to cease our efforts until we achieve our ultimate goal.

Our unwavering commitment is to continue the fight for safer streets until every inhabitant of New York can claim a sense of security and safety. It’s an ongoing battle that mustn’t falter despite the progress made so far, for it’s our belief that every citizen deserves a community where security isn’t a privilege, but a typical expectation.

The considerable funding that law enforcement agencies in the Southern Tier are receiving is part of a grand $36 million investment. This funding is set to be distributed among 28 communities in an effort to stamp out gun violence across the state of New York.

With the assistance of these resources, a significant and sustained decrease in shooting incidents is anticipated and pursued. This initiative is another step in the commitment to public safety and to the belief that every individual should live without fear of gun violence.

The plan in place is designed to not only counter existing gun violence but also to prevent potential future incidents. By investing in local law enforcement agencies, we are able to build stronger communities that are equipped to both resolve and prevent violent crimes.

This strategic approach to financing efforts of law enforcement bodies emphasises the state’s dedication to proactive prevention and swift resolution when it comes to gun-related crimes. Every dollar invested is a step toward ensuring safer communities for all residents across New York.

The intent is for these activates to serve as a foundation for ongoing efforts towards the prevention and reduction of gun violence in New York State. By encouraging and supporting such initiatives, the potential for a safer, more secure future can be realized.
