Elon Musk may have formally parted ways with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), yet the voice of controversy continues to echo. Emerging reports suggest the DOGE is resorting to a newly developed artificial intelligence tool for the creation of a prospective list of federal laws meant for abolition. The target is to obliterate roughly half of the present regulations before the impending anniversary of Trump’s presidency.
The state-of-the-art AI system, named the ‘Doge AI Deregulation Decision Tool,’ has been burdened with the enormous task of meticulously examining approximately 200,000 federal policies. As revealed in a briefing detailing this innovation, nearly half of these regulations are expected to be flagged as suitable candidates for elimination.
The said AI tool has reportedly chalked up few accomplishments already, including facilitating decisions on 1,083 separate policy sections at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in less than a fortnight. Speaking confidentially, three agency staff members affirmed the recent application of this AI-tool for scrutinizing several hundreds, if not more, of regulatory lines.
However, dipping AI toes into such significant tasks has not been without its pitfalls. One HUD worker expressed concerns about the AI model making a number of miscalculations. These errors implied that draftspeople who penned assorted agency guidelines might have misconstrued several legal aspects.
Yet, the fallacy rested not with the human composers but with the AI machine, as it had erroneously interpreted the intricate legal language. This novel system saw usage beyond HUD, extending to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, being responsible for writing every single deregulation.
Predicted milestones are lined out in the DOGE’s presentation, setting a deadline of September 1 for respective agencies to exploit this AI tool for generating their independent list of regulations for abolition. Post this date, it’s DOGE’s responsibility to collate a discard list containing half of all existing Federal regulations, equating to about 100,000 regulatory rules.
Taking inspiration from Trump’s campaign pledges, which included a staunch approach against regulations, arguing they unnecessarily inflated the prices of goods, DOGE is striving to breathe life into these promises. As per DOGE’s data, adherence to the existing rules costs a hefty $3.1 trillion per annum.
Predictions state deploying the AI tool could slash half of all regulations, promising annual savings of $1.5 trillion. This step could also unlock an impressive $600 billion for investment purposes, hike US sales revenue by an additional $1.1 trillion, and bring down the federal budget above $85 billion.
In regards to the usage of AI methodologies in the deregulation process, White House representative, Harrison Fields, remarked that every viable option was under consideration to fulfill Trump’s pledges. He indicated that the preliminary phase was currently underway and that no definitive roadmap had received a nod or sanction yet.
From the very inception of DOGE, AI has played an integral role in its operations. In February, ‘AI-first’ emerged as its strategic direction. By March, AI was gradually integrated into multifarious government branches.
DOGE has been mired in multiple controversies—not solely for its actions, but also due to the agency’s ethos, which favored hiring younger employees. Previously, it had been captained by Elon Musk, adding to its debated reputation.
