President Donald Trump announced Monday that he is shortening the 50-day ultimatum he originally gave Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a peace deal with Ukraine, citing a lack of progress and escalating Russian aggression. Speaking from Scotland alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump said the new deadline will be “about 10 or 12 days from today.”
“I’m very disappointed in President Putin,” Trump said. “Every time we think we’re making some headway, he turns around and starts launching rockets into cities like Kyiv — killing innocent civilians, even people in nursing homes. It’s disgusting. That’s not how peace is made.”

Trump’s comments mark a shift in tone following his July 14 meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, during which he first issued the 50-day deadline and threatened sweeping secondary tariffs on Russia. If Putin fails to broker peace with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by the new shortened deadline, Trump reiterated Monday that his administration will move forward with a 100% tariff regime targeting Russia — and, crucially, any nation doing business with Putin’s regime.
“These are going to be real tariffs,” Trump said. “Massive ones. If you’re buying Russian oil, Russian gas, Russian steel — you’re going to pay. We’re not playing games anymore. Enough is enough.”
According to Trump, the original 50-day window was intended to allow negotiators time to hammer out the framework of a peace deal. But with Moscow intensifying its strikes and Ukraine continuing to suffer civilian casualties, Trump said waiting another month was no longer an option.
“We’ve waited long enough,” Trump said. “We’re not going to sit back while civilians are being slaughtered. There’s no reason to drag this out.”
Trump also took aim at Putin’s refusal to meet Zelensky in person, calling the Kremlin’s argument that Zelensky is illegitimate “a weak excuse.”
“They invaded his country. Now they’re saying he’s not a real leader because they forced Ukraine to suspend elections under martial law? That’s absurd,” Trump said. “If Putin’s serious about ending this war, he needs to sit down with Zelensky and make a deal. Period.”
The most recent round of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, held last week in Istanbul, yielded little progress. Russia continues to demand recognition of its territorial gains, which Zelensky has refused. The only points of agreement so far have been on limited prisoner exchanges.
Meanwhile, the situation on the ground in Ukraine continues to deteriorate. Russian forces have escalated their air assault on civilian infrastructure in recent days, including deadly missile and drone attacks in and around Kyiv. Casualties from these strikes have included dozens of civilians, adding urgency to the Trump administration’s call for a ceasefire.
Despite pressure from Washington, sources close to the Kremlin told Reuters last week that Putin has remained defiant, apparently unmoved by Trump’s initial deadline. With the clock now ticking faster, it remains to be seen whether the threat of full-scale economic isolation will alter the Kremlin’s calculus.
Trump concluded his remarks with a warning: “If Russia doesn’t act fast, we will hit them — and hit them hard — with the most powerful trade penalties the world has ever seen. It’s time for peace. And if Putin won’t deliver it, we will make sure he pays the price.”
