The family of Kaylee Goncalves, a scholar at the University of Idaho, find themselves amidst another threat even as they cope with the loss of their loved one. Kristi Goncalves, Kaylee’s mother, had made a powerful victim impact statement in court during Bryan Kohberger’s trial, who was indicted for the horrifying murder of Kaylee and three other roommates in 2022. Suddenly, while in court, they found themselves the target of a menacing anonymous text.
“I’m seated in the same court and your reactions seem laughable,” read the message, supposedly sent on July 23 and made public on July 26. “It’s clear that Bryan is not guilty. Threatening Bryan with prison exploitation is absurd. I have connections with multiple murderers.” This faceless individual went further to claim, “I’m in touch with a potential murderer located in Moscow, Idaho, who now has been provided your location.”
Reacting to the unsettling series of messages, Steve Goncalves, Kaylee’s father, confessed that the family had alerted their legal counsel who then contacted law enforcement agents to reveal the identity of the mysterious sender. Oddly enough, the family suspects that the real source of the messages is someone located in another state who is attempting to capitalize on their Live TV statement.
“They will surely be brought to justice,” said Steve unflinchingly. “One less lunatic on the loose, pestering vulnerable families.” Steve underscored that events like these tend to draw the attention of a certain eccentric ilk.
Despite the disturbing incidence, the Goncalves family is relieved to have been able to share their courtroom experiences on July 23 with Kohberger. In a strategic attempt to regain control and set the tone of the court proceedings, they resorted to ridiculing him. Steve recounts, “For once, we controlled the narrative and dictated terms to him while he simply sat there taking all the flak.”
“We did the best we could under the circumstances and we are thankful to the court for affording us that chance. It made a big difference,” he reflected thoughtfully.
In what was a memorable court session, Steve, Kristi, and their daughter Alivea Goncalves had some choice words for Kohberger. As Kristi put it, “You are about to experience an environment where your persona won’t matter, and you’ll be stripped of all respect.”
“You will be overlooked, taken advantage of, and will eventually disappear,” she said with emphatic finality. “You will be forever known as an underachiever and a sheer disgrace. The closing of the jail cell door behind you ought to resound in your heart for the rest of your hollow existence. It should serve as a reminder that you are irrelevant.”
Adding a bit more strength to the final blow, Kristi also read out a message from their youngest child to Bryan, “Aubrie, our youngest wanted to share this with you, ‘Despite your impressive grades in high school, your prison life is going to teach you some harsh lessons.’”
