New information comprising of surveillance footage, emergency call records, and distinct images has been made public by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. The aim is to unearth further details about the three individuals believed to be the culprits behind a rooftop shooting, which resulted in injuries to three teenagers. The incident is reported to have taken place around 1:30 am on June 22 in a parking structure situated at 200 Las Olas Circle, in Fort Lauderdale. Among the injured was Richard Thompson, aged 19, who was transported, along with two others, to the Broward Health Medical Center.
Richard Thompson’s mother, Celeste, sheds light on the night’s activities: Richard hosted a gathering on the rooftop of the parking facility. She shares how they were simply celebrating some friendly time together, returning from the beach to park their cars at the top. Celeste describes her son, a university level finance student, as generous and amiable. ‘Richard is a splendid boy. He always tries to bring joy in his presence, polite, gentlemanly, a real door-opener,’ she recounted.
A security camera recorded the events as the group relaxed on the parking structure’s topmost level. Drawing from the recollection, Celeste explained, ‘They were just being usual teenagers, near their vehicle, enjoying music and dance.’ The mother is left in dismay, seeking reasons behind the robbery and subsequent shooting that targeted not only her son, but also his two companions.
As per the statements from the law enforcement, the group was assaulted by a trio of attackers. The trio, two of whom wore masks, and a third one dressed in a white tank top, started the gunfire.
An emergency call made on the night narrates the moments filled with chaos as people hastily tried to escape towards their vehicles. The 911 caller described the event: ‘Sounds of gunfire, followed by terrified screams of girls, and then more shots as a car zooms away.’ Upon being queried about the number of shots by the 911 operator, the caller cautiously estimated it to be somewhere between 10 and 15.
Footage captured the attendees scrambling to their vehicles and speeding away from the scene as shots rang out. In the meantime, the three assailants are seen making their getaway in a black sedan.
Richard, who has undergone several surgical procedures following the incident, is reported to be recovering at his home. However, his mother shares that he is still grappling with his injuries. ‘The bullet caused damage to all internal organs,’ Celeste reported. Any potential witnesses out there are being strongly encouraged to step forward to provide information. ‘This time it is my son, next time it might be yours. Please, don’t shield these perpetrators,’ she pleaded.
