The Trump administration has fired National Security Agency General Counsel April Doss, removing a top intelligence official who previously worked to tie President Donald Trump to Russia during the failed Russiagate operation.
Doss, who served as the NSA’s top lawyer, was quietly removed after The Daily Wire published a report exposing her partisan record and past op-eds defending government censorship, the intelligence community’s treatment of Trump allies, and her own work investigating the president under Senate Democrats.
The NSA scrubbed Doss’s name from its website shortly after the July 23 report. Multiple former officials confirmed her removal to The New York Times, which tried to spin the ousting as politically motivated by the right — conveniently ignoring the substance of the report that led to her downfall.
Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), a key ally of Doss and the Democrat who originally hired her to probe Trump while serving on the Senate Intelligence Committee, rushed to defend her. Warner decried the firing as a “smear campaign” driven by conservatives, further confirming Doss’s entrenchment in Democrat-led intelligence operations.
“We should be outraged by the firing of April Doss,” Warner fumed. “Her dismissal appears to be the result of a politically motivated smear campaign driven by a far-right conspiracy theorist.”
But the facts speak for themselves. Doss publicly defended the surveillance of Carter Page, backed the FBI’s treatment of General Michael Flynn, and falsely claimed President Trump incited an “insurrection,” despite no legal basis for such a charge. Her record is filled with errors of judgment and aggressive defense of deep state overreach — all while pushing narratives that later turned out to be false.
As revealed by The Daily Wire, Doss had also promoted censorship of so-called “misinformation,” including vaccine skepticism and criticism of federal law enforcement, much of which has since been vindicated. Her advocacy was at odds with Trump’s broader push for free speech, transparency, and dismantling the unelected bureaucracy.
She even claimed that Trump supporters were behind the 2020 plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer — despite strong evidence that FBI informants had entrapped the suspects.
Perhaps most damningly, the report revealed that the NSA concealed Doss’s 2022 hiring from Congress. This came after Democrats had previously blocked a Republican nominee to the same position, citing concerns about politicization. Installing Doss without disclosure — despite her known partisan affiliations — exposed a glaring double standard that the administration is now actively working to correct.
Trump allies have taken a hard line on rooting out Russiagate operatives embedded in federal agencies. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has referred numerous officials to the DOJ for allegedly manufacturing intelligence to smear Trump. Gabbard is also coordinating with Attorney General Pam Bondi, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and NSA Acting Director William Hartman to declassify special counsel John Durham’s full report — including a classified annex that reportedly includes foreign-sourced evidence of FBI involvement in fueling the collusion narrative before the launch of the Crossfire Hurricane probe.
Trump himself has accused Barack Obama of orchestrating a politically motivated attack on his campaign and presidency, calling it a “criminal conspiracy” that warrants prosecution. However, Trump acknowledged that a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity likely shields Obama from legal accountability — for now.
Legacy media predictably tried to divert attention from the facts, blaming the firing on commentator Laura Loomer. The New York Times, MSNBC, and The Daily Beast all ran headlines attempting to dismiss the termination as a “right-wing conspiracy,” even though Pentagon officials confirmed the review of Doss’s employment was underway prior to any online commentary.
A Department of Defense spokesman confirmed to The Daily Wire on July 17 that an “update” was coming soon regarding Doss’s status — days before Loomer even reposted the outlet’s article.
The firing of April Doss marks a major move by the Trump administration to clear out entrenched partisan actors inside the intelligence apparatus and restore trust in national security institutions — long undermined by politically motivated abuse of power. With more Russiagate officials under investigation, Doss may be only the beginning.
