Valiant K-9 Officer Oya Loses Life in Line of Duty

During an officer duty operation, K-9 Oya tragically lost her life while trying to nab one out of two individuals who absconded from a hijacked car. The precise details surrounding her demise were not disclosed by the law enforcement department.

Two suspect individuals attempted to escape after they ditched a crashed automobile. Their flight incidentally led to the fatal end of Oya, a loyal K-9 Officer from the North County Police Cooperative. The unfortunate event occurred on a Wednesday morning.

Around 10:30 a.m., the law enforcement officers spotted a stolen motor vehicle in the vicinity of the 6200 block on Wells Avenue. The immediate action was to intercept the vehicle. However, on spotting the officers, the car made a run leaving the scene.

The unfortunate turn of events led to the car crash occurring merely a block away, close to Hodiamont and Wells avenues, which also marks the boundary line between the county and St. Louis. Post-crash, the duo in the vehicle chose to flee on foot, each sprinting in different directions.

The chase then saw the brave K-9 Officer Oya charging to capture one of the evaders. This valiant act, however, marked its tragic end. The exact scenario causing her loss of life, and if the unfortunate incident took place on location or later, was not specifically detailed by the Police.

Following the unfortunate instances, both the suspects managed to elude capture and are currently on the run. It is surmised that they could be armed, posing a potential threat. Officials encourage people to come forward with any pertinent details that may aid in their capture.

In a recent update from the department, it was shared that just over a fortnight ago, K-9 Oya received a bullet-proof vest as a donation to the department, along with fellow K-9 officers Tobi and Victor. The added security measure does make one ponder on the significant risks these loyal officers face during their line of duty.

Also, the previous month, the department had highly commended K-9 Oya for her performance during a felony stop. She had successfully discovered 7.5 grams of what was suspected to be fentanyl. An act that further emphasized Oya’s laudable service in protecting her community.
