New York City Records Historic Low in Gun Violence

The start of this year saw a remarkable drop in gun violence incidents, with the lowest number of shooting victims ever recorded in New York City. Despite the city experiencing its worst mass shooting in a quarter of a century, these figures represent a significant downward trend according to recent criminal data.

From the beginning of the year until the end of July 2025, the city reported a total of 412 shooting incidents involving 489 victims. This notable decrease breaks previous records of 426 shooting incidents and 522 victims respectively, that were registered over the equivalent period in 2017 and 2018.

To highlight the significant change, one can look back to 1993, which marked the start of tracking this type of data. During that period, the city experienced a staggering 3,114 shootings resulting in 3,451 victims of gun violence. The comparison underscores the remarkable progress in making city streets safer.

These decreases coincide with the city mayor’s attempts to bolster his re-election campaign. He is focusing primarily on issues of public safety, often challenging his opponent’s stance towards law enforcement and their proposals aimed at policing.

The mayor found himself at the helm of the city in 2022 during a period of social unrest brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. This climate led to a significant increase in crime rates, reflecting a trend seen in major cities across the United States.

However, as the city, and indeed the country, began to move past the pandemic, the crime trend took a turn. Various crime rates, including those of homicides, showed a consistent decrease, signaling a positive shift for public safety. Nevertheless, it’s important to note that the murder rates in over 60% of cities remain above the pre-2020 levels, as reported by the Council on Criminal Justice.

The national phenomenon of declining murder rates does not overshadow the commendable achievements of the city. Analyzing data for the city’s overall major crime figures from the start of the year reveals a consistent and steady decrease, year on year, for the past three years.

It should be noted that with ‘index crimes’, the term refers to murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny auto. The steady decline in crime rates broadly encompasses these categories.

Another point of significance is the record low levels of shootings and gun violence victims experienced in the city for the month of July. Numbers amounted to 75 and 92 respectively, with the latter including an incident on July 28 when a gunman killed four people in a high-rise before taking his own life.

Additional crime data from July 2025 reveals compelling patterns. Many major felonies exhibited substantial decreases compared to July of the previous year. Robbery, for instance, was down by 7.5%, felony assaults had decreased by 8.2%, and burglaries had taken a 14.2% downward turn.

However, not all crime categories followed this positive trend. Reports of rape in the city indicated a distressing increase. The increase was on the order of 33%, with the month of July seeing 193 such incidents reported across the city, which was a marked rise compared to the previous year.

In spite of these challenges, the overall declining trend in serious crimes is an encouraging sign for the future. The significant reduction in violent crimes, particularly gun-related incidents, is a powerful testament to the efforts undertaken to improve public safety.

Moreover, the resolution demonstrated by city authorities in managing crime is evident in these figures. Despite the additional pressures brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the city showed resilience and determination in tackling crime head on.

It also emphasizes the substantial progress made since the early 1990s, when the city wrestled with enormously high incidences of gun violence. Such progress is a testament to the efficacy of consistent law enforcement efforts and crime prevention strategies.

While there’s still work to be done, particularly in addressing the rise in sexual assault cases, the overall trend typically leans towards safety and security. It’s hoped that this positive trajectory will persist in the years to come.

Extracting this clearer picture from crime data allows for a more objective evaluation, which is a crucial weapon in addressing current issues and shaping future strategies. It becomes more evident that these figures are not just numbers but rather represent lives affected, lives changed, and, thankfully, lives saved.
